Maserati GranTurismo Coupé 2017

In 2017, the Maserati GranTurismo Coupé still belonged to the model’s first generation, a grand tourer designed for everyday use rather than as a track-focused machine. It was built as a 2+2 rear-wheel-drive coupé powered by an atmospheric V8, in the tradition of the brand’s classic grand coupes. Styled by Pininfarina, it retained a long, low silhouette with a stretched bonnet and an overall emphasis on elegance. The 2017 car sits just before the 2018 model-year refresh, making it one of the final iterations of the original phase.

History

The GranTurismo was introduced in 2007 as a grand touring sports car, conceived to combine strong performance with everyday usability. Maserati highlighted a 4.2-litre V8, 405 hp, a top speed of 285 km/h, and usable four-seat accommodation. Its Pininfarina styling extended the brand’s tradition of large coupes while giving the car a modern identity. It also adopted some technical principles from the Quattroporte of the same period, reinforcing its role as a road-focused grand tourer rather than a pure track special.

Over time, the range broadened with more powerful and more performance-oriented derivatives. The GranTurismo S moved to a 4.7-litre V8, while the MC and MC Stradale versions pushed further toward sportiness. The GranTurismo Sport later replaced the S in the regular lineup. In 2009, Maserati also added the GranCabrio, a true four-seat convertible based on the coupé and sold in North America as the GranTurismo Convertible. The 2017 coupé therefore belongs to the latter part of this first generation, just before the significant 2018 model-year update.

Evolution

For 2017, the GranTurismo Coupé remained faithful to the original recipe: an atmospheric V8, rear-wheel drive, a 2+2 layout, and a balance between comfort and driving pleasure. It came just before the 2018 facelift, which brought a revised front end, a new so-called sharknose grille, a redesigned rear section, and an updated infotainment system. That timing explains why the 2017 car still has the cleaner, more traditional appearance of the original model.

Within the range, the 2017 Coupé sat at the grand touring end of the spectrum, without the more overt performance cues of the MC or MC Stradale versions. It continued the spirit of the original GranTurismo as an elegant, long-distance fast coupe. The key change to remember for this generation is not a specific mechanical overhaul for 2017, but the fact that the model was nearing the end of its first-generation life cycle, right before the visual and equipment updates of the final phase.

Variants

In 2017, the GranTurismo Coupé belonged to a range that had already developed several clear branches. The standard versions focused on grand touring with the atmospheric V8 and a relatively restrained presentation, while the earlier GranTurismo S had used the 4.7-litre V8. The GranTurismo Sport later replaced the S in the regular lineup. For drivers seeking a more focused setup, the MC and MC Stradale variants took a more sporting and lightweight direction, with a more aggressive look.

It is also important to distinguish the fixed-roof coupé from the GranCabrio, introduced in 2009, which followed the same philosophy but with a four-seat open body. In North America, that car was sold as the GranTurismo Convertible. The 2017 Coupé was therefore not a standalone special edition but one of the last and most conventional representatives of the first-generation fixed-roof formula.
