Peugeot 207 Hatch 2006

The 2006 Peugeot 207 Hatch entered the range as the versatile small car meant to follow the successful 206. It was launched in France in April 2006 and from the start was offered as a three- or five-door hatchback, with a more upscale presentation and larger dimensions than its predecessor. Peugeot positioned it as a car able to cover a wide range of everyday uses. Depending on market and trim, it could be fitted with petrol or HDi diesel engines, each with different output levels.

History

The Peugeot 207 appeared as Peugeot’s answer to the gradual replacement of the highly successful 206, which had established the brand strongly in the versatile small-car segment. In 2006, Peugeot launched the 207 in France and then progressively expanded its availability to other European markets. The hatchback formed the core of the family, opening the range with a small car silhouette and being offered in three- and five-door body styles.

Compared with the 206, the 207 grew in size and visual presence. Its design was more assertive, with a front end dominated by a large lower opening and elongated headlamps, while the cabin adopted a rounder look. This more upmarket presentation was intended to support a broader mission: the car was meant to work as an all-rounder, suitable for city use but also for a wider variety of everyday needs.

The family later expanded with CC and SW body styles, along with more specialized and sportier derivatives. Even so, the hatchback remained the reference point. In 2009, the model received a major mid-cycle update that brought styling, comfort, safety and efficiency changes, while preserving the car’s basic identity.

Production

The 207 Hatch was launched in France in April 2006, and its distribution then gradually expanded to other European markets. Exact availability dates and naming can vary by country. The model remained in the catalogue until the 208 gained prominence as its replacement in the segment.

Evolution

The 2006 Hatch version is defined first and foremost by its hatchback body, offered with three or five doors. It is the basis of the first phase of the 207, before the arrival of the CC and SW derivatives. Its short silhouette, rear hatch and broad everyday purpose make it the most straightforward form of the range.

Visually, it belongs to the model’s original specification, identifiable by its launch front end and a more rounded interior layout. The most notable changes came in 2009, when the 207 received a mid-cycle update. That revision affected styling, some comfort and safety features, and the efficiency of certain engines.

To tell this 2006 car apart from later 207s, the key clues are its launch-era timing and appearance. It corresponds to the initial phase, before the visual and technical updates introduced in 2009.

Variants

Within the 207 range, the 2006 hatchback is the central version. It acts as the basis for the other derivatives and differs from the SW, which uses a longer estate-style body focused on practicality, and from the CC, whose retractable hardtop completely changes the car’s shape. The hatchback keeps the compact, traditional rear-hatch format.

Differences between versions also depend on market and engine choice. The 207 could be fitted with naturally aspirated petrol engines, VTi and THP units, as well as HDi diesels. Some sportier derivatives, such as the RC or GTi, stood out through turbocharged engines, specific appearance and chassis tuning, but they do not define this launch Hatch.

For the 2006 version, the main points to remember are the three- or five-door body, the model’s initial phase, and its all-round purpose rather than any unverified mechanical detail.
