History

The SLS AMG was unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, with production beginning in spring 2010. It represented an important milestone for AMG, as it was the brand’s first model developed entirely in-house. The car was hand-built through a process split between Austria and Germany: the aluminum chassis and body shell were produced by Magna Steyr in Graz, then sent to Sindelfingen for final assembly. Power came from the naturally aspirated 6.2-liter M159 V8, rated at 571 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque. Within that timeline, the 2011 Roadster emerged as a key addition to the range, introducing an open-top version after the coupe’s launch. It therefore sits at the center of the model’s early life, before later performance-focused updates such as the GT and Black Series.
