Mercedes-Benz G-Klasse 2018

The 2018 Mercedes-Benz G-Klasse Base belongs to a lineage that began in 1979 with a vehicle originally developed from a request made in 1972 by the Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. In the model’s history, 2018 marks an important turning point with the arrival of the third generation, the W464, which kept the G-Klasse’s iconic design while bringing improvements in safety and comfort. In Base form, it represents the most restrained expression of that new chapter, while remaining faithful to the rugged character that defined the model.

History

The G-Klasse began as a military-oriented vehicle before becoming a civil model produced from 1979 in Graz, Austria. Over time, it gained several technical updates, including an automatic transmission in 1981, electronic fuel injection in 1982, and ABS in 1989. Those steps helped the model move from a primarily utilitarian role toward a broader identity, without losing its recognizable shape. In 1999, the launch of the G 55 AMG opened the door to a more luxurious and higher-performance direction for the range.

In 2018, the G-Klasse entered a new phase with the third-generation W464. The dossier emphasizes improvements in safety and comfort, while preserving the model’s iconic design. For the Base version, that means a simpler presentation within an important generational change. It therefore continues the G-Klasse tradition of combining toughness, prestige, and a very distinctive style.

Production

Civil production of the G-Klasse began in 1979 in Graz, Austria. The dossier states that the 2018 version corresponds to the arrival of the third-generation W464, but it gives no more detailed production information specific to the Base trim. It can nonetheless be linked to this new phase of the model, focused on improvements in safety and comfort.

Evolution

The 2018 Base version sits at the point where the G-Klasse adopts the W464 generation. According to the dossier, this update is defined primarily by gains in safety and comfort, while the styling language that makes the model instantly recognizable remains intact. The Base trim can therefore be understood as the entry-level expression of this new generation, with a restrained approach that stays loyal to the vehicle’s historical identity.

Compared with earlier generations, the main value of this evolution lies less in a visual overhaul than in renewed technical foundations and a more refined cabin experience. The G-Klasse remains associated with toughness, but the 2018 Base benefits from the work done on safety and comfort.

Variants

Within the G-Klasse range, the 2018 Base version occupies the simplest position in a generation already marked by improvements in safety and comfort. The dossier does not provide trim-specific equipment details, but it does allow this version to be placed as the most restrained expression of the new W464. It therefore acts as an entry point to the range, while keeping the same visual identity as the other versions.

The G-Klasse lineage has also included more notable variants over time, such as the 1999 G 55 AMG, which signaled the model’s move into the luxury high-performance segment, and the 2024 G 580 with EQ technology, the fully electric version. The 2018 Base sits between those milestones as a more conventional configuration, focused on continuity rather than a special performance or powertrain identity.
