Naming

Mercedes naming explained: what do C 220 d, GLC, AMG, and 4MATIC mean?

Decode a Mercedes name: the class letter, the number, the d and e suffixes, the GL SUV rule, the AMG Line vs Mercedes-AMG difference, and why the 300 SL reads backwards.

Updated in 2026

Direct answer

How do you read a Mercedes-Benz name?

In “C 220 d”, the C is the C-Class, the 220 is a power index (historically the 2.2-litre displacement), and the d means diesel. Since 1993 the class letter comes before the number; before then it was the other way round.

  1. Read the first letter or letters: that is the class, so the family and size.
  2. Read the number: it is the power level within that class.
  3. Read the suffix: d for diesel, e for plug-in hybrid, nothing for petrol.
  4. Read the rest: 4MATIC for all-wheel drive, AMG Line for a trim pack, Mercedes-AMG for a true performance car.

Why these names look unreadable

Mercedes has the most orderly system in the industry — on paper. A letter for the family, a number for power, a suffix for the fuel: three blocks and the car is placed. The catch is that the system was rebuilt twice, in 1993 and 2015, and cars from all three eras are still on the road together.

Hence the feeling of chaos: a 190 E, an ML 350, and a GLE 400 d all follow the same logic, but three different versions of it. Decoding a Mercedes starts with knowing which era its name comes from.

“C 220 d 4MATIC” piece by piece

Decoding the Mercedes-Benz C 220 d 4MATIC
PieceWhat it means
CThe class: family and rank in the range. A for the compact, C for the mid-size saloon, E for the executive car, S for the flagship, G for the off-roader.
220The power level within the class. Historically the displacement: 220 for 2.2 L, 500 for 5.0 L. That link has been broken since the 2010s: see below.
dThe energy: d for diesel, e for plug-in hybrid, nothing for petrol. Older diesels wore CDI or BlueTEC.
4MATICAll-wheel drive. The equivalent of BMW's xDrive or Audi's quattro.

The classes: the 2015 rule that makes it all readable

The families in the range
Letter or numberFamily
A, B, C, E, SSaloons and compacts, from smallest to most prestigious.
GLA, GLB, GLC, GLE, GLSThe SUVs. Since 2015 it is GL plus the letter of the matching saloon: the GLC is the C-Class SUV, the GLE the E-Class one.
CLA, CLE, CLSThe four-door coupés, derived from the saloon whose letter they carry.
SL, SLCThe roadsters. SL stands for Sport Leicht — sporty and light.
GThe off-roader, from Geländewagen, German for cross-country vehicle.
EQElectric. First a separate range (EQA, EQE, EQS), then, since 2024, a mention attached to the class name: “with EQ Technology”.

Where the rule no longer holds

The number no longer gives the displacement. A C 200 and a C 300 can share the same 2.0 turbo, tuned differently. The number ranks power within the class; it no longer describes the engine.

Neither do AMG numbers. The 63 long meant a 6.2- then 4.0-litre V8; on the current C-Class, a C 63 is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder hybrid. The 45 in an A 45 is also a 2.0. These numbers have become ranks in the AMG hierarchy, not displacements.

Before 1993 the name read backwards: number first, letter after. That is why it is a 300 SL, a 190 E, or a 500 E, never an SL 300. The 1993 reform moved the class letter to the front, and both forms coexist depending on the car's age.

Several models changed name without changing car. In 2015 the ML became the GLE, the GLK became the GLC, and the SLK became the SLC. A listing can therefore describe the same car under two names depending on its year.

The suffixes worth knowing

Common suffixes and mentions
MentionMeaning
dDiesel.
ePlug-in hybrid.
CDI / BlueTECOlder diesel designations.
4MATICAll-wheel drive.
KompressorSupercharged petrol engine, on 1990s and 2000s models.
T-ModellThe estate, also sold as Break or Estate depending on the market.
MaybachThe ultra-luxury sub-brand, applied to the S-Class or the GLS.

The trap: AMG Line is not AMG

Like BMW's M Sport, AMG Line is a styling pack: specific bumpers, wheels, seats, and steering wheel on an otherwise ordinary C 220 d. A Mercedes-AMG is built in Affalterbach, with its own engine and chassis.

In between, the mid-tier AMG range — the 35, 43, and 53 — sits apart: engines prepared by AMG, but a technical base closer to the standard cars than the 63 models.

Visually, the boot badge is the most reliable cue: “AMG” attached to the number means a true AMG, while AMG Line mostly shows up as a fender plaque or lettering on the door sills.

Codes like W124 and W463: the letter names the body

Like BMW, Mercedes gives each generation an internal code the car does not wear. The twist is that its first letter names the body: W for the saloon, C for the coupé, S for the estate, A for the convertible, R for the roadster, X for the SUV.

One model therefore produces several codes: a given C-Class generation is a W205 as a saloon and a C205 as a coupé. Do not confuse that coupé C with the C of C-Class — same letter, two roles.

Common generation codes
CodeGeneration
W124The 1980s and 1990s E-Class, before the name “E-Class” existed.
W201The 190, ancestor of the C-Class.
W463The modern G-Class, built under this code since 1990.
W205 / C205The same C-Class, as a saloon then as a coupé.

Frequently asked questions

What does the d mean in Mercedes C 220 d?

The d means diesel. An e in the same position marks a plug-in hybrid, and no letter means petrol. On older models diesel was written CDI or BlueTEC.

What does 4MATIC mean?

It is Mercedes' trade name for all-wheel drive, the equivalent of BMW's xDrive and Audi's quattro.

What is the difference between AMG Line and Mercedes-AMG?

AMG Line is a styling pack fitted to a standard car. Mercedes-AMG refers to a car developed and assembled by AMG, with its own engine and chassis.

Why is it a 300 SL and not an SL 300?

Because before the 1993 reform Mercedes wrote the number before the letter. The 1954 300 SL follows the old rule, a 2000s SL 500 the new one.

GLC, GLE, GLS: how do you know which is biggest?

Read the last letter as a saloon letter: the GLC matches the C-Class, the GLE the E-Class, the GLS the S-Class. The SUV hierarchy mirrors the saloon one exactly.

And if all you have is the car in front of you?

A badge can be removed, swapped, or added: it is one of the most common modifications. When the name is missing or looks wrong, the car itself remains — its silhouette, lights, and grille. That is where photo recognition takes over from decoding.
