History

The 2010 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupé represents the very first model of the SLS AMG lineup, fully engineered by AMG. Revealed in 2009, its production began in spring 2010, with European sales starting in mid-2010. Produced as a single generation identified by the code C197, it marked AMG’s evolution into a standalone manufacturer. Its aluminum chassis and body were crafted by Magna Steyr in Austria and then hand-assembled in Sindelfingen, Germany. Powered by the naturally aspirated M159 6.2-liter V8 engine producing 571 horsepower, it set a strong performance benchmark. This initial release paved the way for subsequent variants like the GT and Black Series.

Production

Production of the 2010 SLS AMG Coupé began in spring 2010. The aluminum chassis and body were manufactured by Magna Steyr in Austria and then sent to Sindelfingen, Germany, where AMG completed the final assembly by hand. This process ensured high artisanal quality and meticulous attention to detail in each unit produced.

Evolution

The 2010 Coupé version is the original foundation for the SLS AMG. Following this debut, more potent versions appeared: the 2012 GT with 591 horsepower and the 2013 Black Series pushing to 631 horsepower. Each update enhanced the car's sportiness and performance, yet the initial Coupé remains the flagship original model setting the benchmark for power and design within the SLS AMG range.

Variants

In 2010, the sole available variant was the closed Coupé version, representing the purest form of the SLS AMG’s debut. Later variants like the open-top Roadster appeared in 2011, followed by GT and Black Series versions which further enhanced and pushed the performance boundaries. The original Coupé variant thus maintained a straightforward configuration, encapsulating the initial essence of this supercar.
