Mercedes-Benz S-Klasse Maybach Sedan 2021

The 2021 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class Sedan introduced a new generation of Mercedes-Benz’s ultra-luxury saloon, based on the W223 S-Class. Revealed globally on November 19, 2020, it uses a wheelbase extended by 18 centimetres over the long-wheelbase S-Class, with the additional space focused on rear-seat comfort. The first model offered was the Mercedes-Maybach S 580 4MATIC, powered by a twin-turbocharged V8 supported by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Distinctive exterior detailing, Executive rear seating and chauffeur-oriented equipment separate it from the regular S-Class. Its market position places it against luxury flagships from Bentley and Rolls-Royce.

History

The 2021 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class belongs to Mercedes-Benz’s strategy of positioning Maybach as an integrated ultra-luxury marque rather than as a separate model range. The first Mercedes-Maybach S-Class went on sale in 2015, replacing the earlier approach based on independently developed Maybach automobiles. The formula combines the S-Class platform, technology and safety systems with more exclusive styling and a stronger emphasis on rear-passenger comfort. The 2021 model followed shortly after the introduction of the new W223 S-Class. It retained the family’s digital interfaces and driver-assistance systems while adding a longer body, a dedicated grille, larger rear doors and a cabin designed with chauffeur use in mind. Mercedes-Benz described the car as a combination of its flagship sedan technology and Maybach’s long-standing luxury identity. The company stated that more than 60,000 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class cars had been sold worldwide since 2015 before this generation arrived.

Anecdotes

The optional two-tone body finish continued a visual signature long associated with large Maybach models. On the 2021 generation, the dividing line between the two colours emphasises the car’s length and chauffeur-oriented character. Mercedes-Benz also highlighted wood trim that could extend across the backs of the front seats and the console between the two rear passengers. These details illustrate the car’s purpose: rather than radically changing the S-Class driving concept, the Maybach version concentrates on making the second row more private, comfortable and luxurious.

Production

Mercedes-Benz stated in November 2020 that more than 60,000 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class cars had been sold worldwide since the model’s commercial launch in 2015. This is a cumulative figure for the model line and should not be interpreted as production for the 2021 model year alone. The company also reported nearly 12,000 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class sales in 2019, its strongest annual result at that point. China was identified as a particularly important market, alongside Russia, South Korea, the United States and Germany. No separate, independently verified production total for the 2021 Sedan is used here because a reliable model-year breakdown is not publicly established in the consulted sources.

Press reception

Automotive reviewers generally described the 2021 Mercedes-Maybach S 580 as a more exclusive, rear-passenger-focused interpretation of the new S-Class. Car and Driver praised the twin-turbocharged V8, supple ride and richly appointed cabin, while noting that the car remained visually more restrained than some British rivals. MotorTrend argued that this generation gave the Maybach identity greater coherence by integrating it more deeply into the S-Class structure. Reviews therefore concentrated on comfort, quietness and rear-seat space rather than sporting ability. The consensus was that the car’s strongest qualities appeared during relaxed, chauffeur-driven travel, where its additional length and equipment were most relevant.

Evolution

Compared with the previous Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, the 2021 model moved onto the new W223 S-Class architecture and significantly increased the focus on rear-seat travel. Its wheelbase is 18 centimetres longer than that of the long-wheelbase S-Class, while Executive rear seats and a chauffeur package were specified as standard in Mercedes-Benz’s launch material. The car also introduced features such as electrically operated rear doors, active road-noise cancellation and E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL suspension. The range opened with the V8-powered S 580 4MATIC. A V12-powered S 680 was announced for the 2022 model year, so it should not be treated as part of the original 2021 launch specification.

Variants

The main version associated with the 2021 model year is the Mercedes-Maybach S 580 4MATIC. It uses a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged petrol V8 supported by a 48-volt electrical system, a nine-speed automatic transmission and Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC all-wheel drive. Its equipment is centred on rear-passenger comfort, with Executive seats, a chauffeur package and a more elaborate interior treatment than the standard S-Class. Mercedes-Maybach also offered personalisation possibilities including two-tone exterior paint, dedicated wheel designs and several interior material combinations. The V12-powered S 680 4MATIC belongs to the range expansion announced for the 2022 model year, rather than the initial 2021 Sedan specification.
