Mercedes-Benz C-Klasse Sedan 2007

Launched in 2007, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan from the 204 series introduced a new generation that was larger and more sophisticated than its predecessor. Known internally as the W 204, it combined sharper styling, a roomier cabin and a range of four- and six-cylinder petrol or diesel engines, depending on market and trim. Mercedes-Benz separated the range into CLASSIC, ELEGANCE and AVANTGARDE equipment lines, with an AMG sports package available for a more dynamic appearance. The sedan also introduced systems such as AGILITY CONTROL and ADAPTIVE BRAKE, while the INTELLIGENT LIGHT SYSTEM was available in the model’s technology package. For 2007, the C-Class remained Mercedes-Benz’s entry-level car line, but it adopted the brand’s established emphasis on comfort, safety and refinement.

History

The 204 series was unveiled in January 2007, with the sedan reaching European dealers toward the end of March. Mercedes-Benz positioned it around a combination of safety, comfort and agility, while giving customers visibly different design identities through the equipment lines. Compared with the 203 series, the new car grew in every major dimension, improving interior space and ride comfort. Its styling used tighter lines, larger clean surfaces and a more assertive front end. The AVANTGARDE line placed the Mercedes star in the radiator grille, whereas CLASSIC and ELEGANCE retained the traditional star mounted on the bonnet. The engine range included four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel units, varying by market. Mercedes-Benz unveiled the estate version at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2007, several months after the sedan. The W 204 sedan continued as part of the 204 series until 2014.

Anecdotes

The 204 series was the first C-Class generation to offer two clearly different front-end identities. AVANTGARDE placed the Mercedes star in the center of the grille for a sportier look, while CLASSIC and ELEGANCE retained the traditional bonnet-mounted star. Mercedes-Benz’s historical archive also links the 2007 launch period with the arrival of the V8-powered C 63 AMG, which became the performance flagship of the series.

Production

The W 204 sedan was produced from 2007 to 2014 as part of the wider 204 series. Mercedes-Benz Classic records total 204-series production of 2,417,117 vehicles by the end of 2013, built at Sindelfingen, Bremen, East London in South Africa and Beijing. The total consisted of 1,836,349 sedans, 429,939 estates and 150,829 coupes. This figure covers the complete series rather than the 2007 model year alone. The sedan was the first body style introduced for the generation; the estate followed in autumn 2007, while the coupe arrived in 2011. The sources consulted do not separate the exact number of sedans built during calendar year 2007, so a narrower production figure would be speculative.

Press reception

Automotive reviewers generally credited the 2007 C-Class with solid construction, good comfort and a strong safety equipment package. Edmunds regarded the C 350 as the most appealing version for performance, while considering the smaller engines adequate for normal driving. Reviews also identified limitations: rear-seat legroom was not especially generous, the cabin presentation could feel ordinary beside newer rivals, and Sport models were not as agile or communicative as the best compact sport sedans. Safety results were favorable in the IIHS assessment: the sedan earned a Good rating in the original moderate-overlap frontal test, while the side evaluation listed Acceptable protection under the stated criteria. Overall, the period reception was balanced, presenting the C-Class as a competent and comfortable premium sedan rather than an undisputed class leader.

Evolution

The 2007 C-Class evolved through a comprehensive redesign rather than a single headline mechanical change. Its structure, exterior dimensions and interior packaging all moved beyond the 203 series. Mercedes-Benz also focused on driving balance with AGILITY CONTROL, combining adaptive shock-absorber control with more responsive steering. The ADAPTIVE BRAKE system added further braking assistance functions. Customers could choose between three distinct equipment and design lines, with AVANTGARDE providing the sportier visual treatment. Later developments within the 204 series included the C 350 CGI direct-injection model in 2008 and a major facelift in 2011. Those updates belong to the wider history of the generation, however, and should not be confused with the original 2007 sedan specification.

Variants

In 2007, the C-Class sedan was organized around the CLASSIC, ELEGANCE and AVANTGARDE equipment lines. CLASSIC offered a restrained presentation, while ELEGANCE emphasized comfort and Mercedes-Benz’s traditional luxury styling. AVANTGARDE used a grille-mounted star and a more energetic exterior treatment. An AMG sports package could add a more performance-oriented appearance. The mechanical range differed between markets: Mercedes-Benz described the generation as using four- and six-cylinder petrol or diesel engines, but the exact combinations were not universal. Model names and trim structures therefore varied by region. In North America, period sources identify the C 230, C 280 and C 350, offered in Sport and Luxury forms. Those American designations should not automatically be applied to European-market cars, where the range included different petrol and diesel badges.
