McLaren MP4-12C 2011

The 2011 McLaren MP4-12C Base was the first production model developed and built by McLaren since the F1. Conceived as a mid-engined supercar, it combined a carbon-fibre Monocell structure, a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 and a dual-clutch transmission. Its engineering focused on aerodynamic efficiency, visibility and a broad operating range rather than deliberately extravagant styling. The Monocell, formed as a single-piece carbon-fibre passenger cell, became one of the car’s defining technical features. History

The MP4-12C project was revealed publicly in September 2009, with sales planned for 2011. Its name used the MP4 designation associated with McLaren grand prix cars, while the number 12 referred to an internal efficiency scale and the letter C highlighted the use of carbon fibre. The car was developed around a Monocell passenger cell, produced through a dedicated process intended to reduce weight and simplify construction compared with the McLaren F1. The exterior design, created under Frank Stephenson, emphasised a low profile, reduced frontal area and aerodynamic efficiency. Side-mounted radiators, short exhaust routing and hydraulically controlled suspension reflected the same focus on compact packaging and control. McLaren Automotive launched its first products in 2011, beginning with the MP4-12C. Production took place at the McLaren Production Centre in Woking, which officially opened in November 2011. Anecdotes

The MP4-12C name does not directly describe the engine displacement. “MP4” continued McLaren’s historic grand prix naming system, “12” referred to an internal efficiency scale and “C” highlighted the use of carbon fibre. Production

The MP4-12C was built at McLaren’s Production Centre in Woking, located near the McLaren Technology Centre. Construction began in spring 2010, and the facility officially opened in November 2011. Evolution
