Lamborghini Countach LP400 1974

The 1974 Lamborghini Countach LP400 is the inaugural version of the iconic Countach series. It introduced a bold yet clean design language characterized by narrow fenders and a distinctive recessed roof area dubbed the "periscope." As a V12-powered coupe, it established the technical and stylistic foundation for subsequent Countach models throughout the late 1970s.

History

The Lamborghini Countach project began as a Bertone concept revealed in 1971, designed by Marcello Gandini. Following three years of technical development and road testing, the LP400 version was launched in 1974. This initial iteration featured a relatively clean body design without fender flares and was notably marked by a roof recess for the interior mirror, earning the nickname "periscope." This version laid the groundwork for a series that would continue production through 1978.

Production

From 1974 to 1978, Lamborghini manufactured approximately 152 units of the Countach LP400. This relatively limited production makes the version highly sought-after, establishing the foundation for a lineage that would undergo several evolutions through the late 1980s.

Evolution

The LP400 serves as the technical and stylistic starting point for the Countach. Its clean design, featuring narrow fenders and the distinctive "periscope" roof, stands in stark contrast to later, wider models fitted with aerodynamic extensions. The 1978 LP400 S introduced these bolder visual elements, while subsequent models focused on mechanical enhancements such as increased V12 displacement. As such, the LP400 remains the most minimalistic and pure version of the classic series.

Variants

The Lamborghini Countach LP400 is the original version, identifiable by its slim fenders and the "periscope" roof. This stylistic purity sets it apart from variants like the LP400 S, which added wider fender flares, broader tires, and "phone-dial" style wheels. Subsequent models, such as the 5000 S and 5000 Quattrovalvole, focused more on engine and aerodynamic enhancements, adopting a more aggressive and less minimalist appearance.
