Audi RS3 Sportback 2016

The 2016 Audi RS3 Sportback produces 367 hp from a 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder engine. This second-generation performance compact combines a five-door Sportback body, quattro all-wheel drive and a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission. Audi quoted 465 Nm of torque and a 0–100 km/h time of 4.3 seconds for the European specification. At launch, the RS3 was presented as the most powerful car in the premium compact segment. Its visual changes include flared wheel arches, a honeycomb grille, dedicated 19-inch wheels and RS-specific interior details. The result is a compact car with serious straight-line performance, while retaining the practicality, refinement and everyday usability expected from an Audi A3-based model.

History

The second-generation Audi RS3 Sportback appeared in summer 2015, based on the Audi A3 Sportback. It followed the first RS3 Sportback while retaining the compact five-door layout, five-cylinder engine and all-wheel-drive concept, but increased output to 367 hp. Audi stated that the 2.5 TFSI produced 465 Nm between 1,625 and 5,550 rpm, with the top speed normally limited electronically to 250 km/h. The car also gained a ride height 25 mm lower than the regular A3 Sportback, wider tracks, upgraded suspension and brakes, and progressive steering. In Europe, it competed with all-wheel-drive performance hatchbacks such as the Mercedes-AMG A45 and Volkswagen Golf R. Audi Japan announced its local launch for October 2015, making this generation the first RS3 Sportback officially introduced in that market.

Anecdotes

The RS3’s 2.5 TFSI engine continues Audi’s five-cylinder tradition, a layout strongly associated with the brand’s competition cars during the 1980s. Audi states that this engine family won the International Engine of the Year award in its category for five consecutive years from 2010 to 2014. The 2016 RS3 uses an evolved version with direct injection, turbocharging and an intercooler.

Production

Audi UK lists the RS3 Sportback model period as 2015 to 2016. The second generation appeared in Europe during summer 2015, while Audi Japan announced local sales beginning on October 20, 2015. It was produced as the high-performance derivative of the A3 Sportback and offered with a consistent core specification in the available documentation: a five-cylinder engine, S tronic transmission and quattro all-wheel drive. No sufficiently reliable worldwide production total was identified in the sources consulted. Country-by-country volumes, equipment splits and possible limited editions should therefore not be inferred from the model’s sales period alone.

Press reception

Specialist publications generally acknowledged the progress made over the previous RS3. Autocar praised the car’s performance, engine and gearbox, while also pointing to a relatively detached chassis and a high price. In its November 2016 review, evo described the RS3 as fast, practical and well finished, but less rewarding on track than some less powerful rivals. The overall verdict was therefore balanced: the Sportback impressed with its acceleration, stability and five-cylinder soundtrack, yet its weight and tendency toward understeer reduced driver involvement in corners. Its appeal rested more on effortless pace and everyday usability than on class-leading agility.

Evolution

Compared with the first RS3 Sportback, the 2016 model moved to the A3 generation’s modular MQB platform. Autocar reported an approximately 55 kg reduction in weight and greater structural rigidity. The five-cylinder engine remained the defining feature, but output increased to 367 hp. Audi also refined the quattro control strategy, chassis tuning and ride quality. The result was a more sophisticated and comfortable car than its predecessor, while preserving very strong performance. The range later expanded with an RS3 Sedan in 2017, leaving the 2015–2016 Sportback as the compact five-door body style of this generation. Its main development was therefore an improvement in refinement and platform efficiency rather than a change to the basic RS3 formula.

Variants

For the 2016 model year, the Audi RS3 is primarily identified as a five-door Sportback. The sources consulted do not document a separate body-style derivative sold under the 2016 model designation within this generation. Its core mechanical specification is consistent: a 2.5 TFSI five-cylinder engine, a seven-speed S tronic gearbox and quattro all-wheel drive. Equipment could differ between markets and according to the options selected, including adaptive dampers, sports seats and trim details. The documented standard configuration should therefore be separated from market-specific equipment and optional packages when comparing individual cars.
