History

The Rafale was unveiled on 18 June 2023 at the Paris Air Show in Le Bourget, a setting chosen to underline its direct link with aviation. Renault had already announced the name a few weeks earlier, in May 2023. For the brand, this was a new automotive nameplate, although the word itself had a much older industrial background: after Louis Renault acquired Caudron in 1933, the Caudron C.460 was renamed Rafale in 1934. That single-seat racing aircraft, designed by Marcel Riffard, was known for its aerodynamics and for several records, including achievements associated with Hélène Boucher.

The modern model has no direct predecessor in Renault’s road-car lineup. It appears as a fresh family launched as part of Renault’s upmarket push and its return to the D segment. The 2023 Base version therefore belongs to the model’s initial rollout, before the later expansion of the range with more advanced powertrains. It is the entry point into the Rafale line-up, with no earlier Rafale generation to compare it against.

The Rafale name refers to a specific aviation heritage rather than a purely marketing-led idea. It recalls a Caudron racing aircraft renamed in 1934 after Caudron came under Louis Renault’s control. That background explains why the modern model was introduced at the Le Bourget Air Show.

Evolution

At this stage, the Renault Rafale has only one clearly identified generation: the one launched in 2023. The Base version therefore belongs to the model’s first market introduction and is not a facelift or a continuation of an older road-going Rafale. Its technical foundation is shared with the Austral and Espace, but Renault gave it its own body, rear track and chassis tuning to create a distinct character.

Structurally, the Rafale uses the CMF-CD platform and has specific dimensions, including a 4.71-meter length and a 2.74-meter wheelbase. In this launch configuration, the model’s development is mainly expressed through later trims and powertrains rather than through a generational change.
