History

The name Macan comes from the Indonesian word for “tiger,” chosen to suggest strength and agility. Porsche also selected Leipzig as the production center for the new SUV and announced a €500 million expansion of the facility. The production Macan made its public debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2013, ahead of European customer deliveries in spring 2014.
Production
Macan production began at Porsche’s Leipzig facility toward the end of 2013, following an expansion that added dedicated body and paint operations. The plant was designed to support output of roughly 50,000 vehicles per year. Porsche later reported approximately 45,000 Macan vehicles delivered worldwide during 2014, but that figure covers the complete model range rather than the Base version alone. No reliable public breakdown has been identified for global 2014 Base production by engine, market or trim level. Production figures should therefore be presented as totals for the Macan line, not as a confirmed count for the four-cylinder Base model.

Early road tests commonly highlighted the balance Porsche was pursuing: a family-sized SUV with accurate steering, responsive handling and an interior presentation related to the rest of the Porsche range. Reviews of the four-cylinder version were more qualified. Contemporary 2014 testing credited the entry model with strong build quality, a capable chassis and an effective PDK transmission, while also noting that its engine had less character and reserve than the V6 alternatives. That assessment gives the Base Macan a distinct role in the range: it offers access to the Macan concept and comparatively restrained performance rather than the outright pace of the S and Turbo models. Results varied with market specification, equipment and the particular vehicle tested.
Evolution
The first-generation Macan evolved through a gradual expansion of the range rather than an immediate redesign. The 2014 launch was centered on petrol and diesel V6 engines for the main European variants.
