Porsche Boxster 2012
In 2012, the Porsche Boxster base model enters the new 981 generation, which brings a deeper overhaul of the body and chassis. This mid-engine roadster continues a line that began in the mid-1990s while adopting a more taut shape and revised proportions. The base version remains the entry point to the range, without the more radical traits of the sportier derivatives, yet it benefits from the updated design and engineering direction of this generation. In the model’s history, it marks the starting point of the 981 phase, at a moment when the Boxster changes more substantially than through a simple refresh.

History
The Boxster began as a concept shown in Detroit in January 1993, and Porsche kept much of that study’s shape when series production started in the summer of 1996 for the 1997 model year. The first production car, known as the 986, used a 2.5-liter flat six with liquid cooling and four valves per cylinder. The mid-engine layout, with the engine positioned ahead of the rear axle, quickly became one of the Boxster’s defining traits. In 1999, the range expanded with a 2.7-liter engine and the Boxster S with a 3.2-liter flat six. The second generation, the 987, arrived in 2004 with oval headlights, larger wheels, and a revised interior. The 981 generation followed in 2012 with a more thorough redesign of the body and chassis. The 2012 base Boxster therefore belongs to the point in the timeline when the model enters a more substantial renewal phase while remaining true to its mid-engine Porsche roadster identity.
