Peugeot 508 Sedan 2018

2018

Revealed at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, the Peugeot 508 Sedan introduced a second generation with a lower, shorter and more distinctive design. Unlike its predecessor’s conventional booted body, it adopted a five-door fastback layout, combining frameless doors with a practical liftback tailgate and a coupé-like profile. Measuring 4.75 metres long and approximately 1.40 metres high, it aimed to bring a more dynamic character to Peugeot’s large family car class while retaining everyday usability. The cabin featured the latest version of Peugeot’s i-Cockpit, and the launch range combined PureTech petrol and BlueHDi diesel engines with the EAT8 automatic transmission. A six-speed manual gearbox was available with the entry-level diesel engine. (media.stellantis.com)

History

The 2018 Peugeot 508 replaced the first-generation model introduced in 2010 and represented a significant change of direction for Peugeot in the D-segment. The company moved away from the conventional four-door saloon in favour of a five-door fastback, responding to changing European preferences and the growing influence of SUVs. The new model was officially presented in February 2018 before making its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show. Peugeot announced worldwide sales from September that year. The car used the EMP2 platform, shared with other PSA Group vehicles, while engineers focused on lower mass, increased body rigidity and improved acoustic refinement. Production was assigned to the Mulhouse plant in France, with powertrain manufacturing linked to the Trémery and Douvrin sites. A concealed liftback tailgate combined the fastback profile with easier access to the luggage compartment. (media.stellantis.com)

Anecdotes

The 508’s design borrowed several ideas from Peugeot’s Exalt and Instinct concept cars, especially in the treatment of the dashboard and front end. Peugeot also reported using a particularly demanding stamping process to create the shape of the rear wings, a technique more commonly associated with sports cars. Another distinctive detail is the use of frameless doors. They help create the car’s low roofline, but required additional attention to sealing, rigidity and acoustic insulation during development. Production

The second-generation Peugeot 508 Sedan was built at the Mulhouse plant in France, according to Peugeot’s February 2018 launch material. The French facilities at Trémery and Douvrin supplied the powertrains used by the model. Peugeot stated that the car would carry “Origine France Garantie” certification at launch. The sources consulted confirm the manufacturing locations and the planned sales start, but they do not provide a dependable production total for the Sedan body style alone. A precise figure should therefore not be assigned without an official breakdown by year, market and body configuration. The available evidence supports the car’s French production origins, but not a verified worldwide production number for the 2018 Sedan. (media.stellantis.com)

Press reception

Automotive coverage generally highlighted the 508’s styling shift in 2018. Autocar described the move from the previous saloon to a more expressive five-door fastback and noted Peugeot’s ambition to compete more closely with premium-branded cars. The publication also praised the car’s ride comfort, perceived cabin quality and distinctive interior presentation. Its low roofline came with compromises, including restricted rear headroom, while the Peugeot i-Cockpit driving position could depend strongly on the driver’s seating preferences. Euro NCAP’s assessment, published in December 2018, recorded scores of 96% for adult occupant protection, 86% for child occupant protection, 71% for vulnerable road users and 79% for safety assist systems. Evolution

The most important change was the body style. The 508 moved from a conventional saloon format to a lower and more compact five-door fastback design. Its overall length was reduced by eight centimetres compared with the previous generation, while its height fell by around six centimetres. The wheelbase became slightly shorter, but Peugeot retained a cabin designed for family use and quoted a 487-litre luggage capacity. The mechanical range also shifted towards Euro 6.c engines and wider use of the EAT8 automatic transmission. At launch, the line-up included the PureTech 180 and 225 petrol engines and several BlueHDi diesel units, depending on market. Peugeot announced a plug-in hybrid version for autumn 2019, although that powertrain was not part of the initial 2018 launch range. (media.stellantis.com)

Variants

The launch range of the Peugeot 508 Sedan varied by country, but the 2018 press material identified two petrol engines and four diesel versions. The petrol line was based on the 1.6-litre four-cylinder PureTech: the 180 hp version used the EAT8 automatic gearbox, while the 225 hp engine was reserved for the GT specification. Diesel power came from 1.5- and 2.0-litre BlueHDi units. The BlueHDi 130 could be ordered with either a six-speed manual gearbox or the EAT8 automatic, while the BlueHDi 160 and 180 were paired with the eight-speed automatic. Trim names, equipment and engine availability depended on market. European launch specifications included Active, Allure, GT Line and GT versions, although not every market necessarily offered the complete list. (media.stellantis.com)
