Pagani Huayra Roadster 2017

Presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2017, the Pagani Huayra Roadster is a two-seat hypercar with a longitudinally mounted, centrally positioned rear engine and rear-wheel drive. Pagani’s published specifications list a 5,980 cc Mercedes-AMG V12 producing 764 hp and 1,000 Nm of torque. Its structure combines a Carbo-Titanium and Carbo-Triax HP52 monocoque with tubular steel front and rear frames. With a quoted weight of 1,280 kg, the roadster is notable for being lighter than the Huayra coupe from which it evolved. History

Pagani says the Huayra Roadster took six years to develop. The company set out to avoid the usual compromises associated with an open-top car by making the roadster lighter than the coupe while also increasing structural stiffness. The finished project was shown publicly at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, following extensive work on its materials, chassis and bodywork. A new monocoque using Carbo-Triax HP52 formed part of that weight and rigidity strategy. Pagani states that the roadster is 80 kg lighter than the earlier Huayra coupe and that stiffness increased by 52 percent. It also uses a 5,980 cc twin-turbocharged V12 developed by Mercedes-AMG, connected to a seven-speed automated manual transmission. With production announced at 100 cars, each example could be extensively tailored to its customer’s requirements. The Huayra Roadster therefore represents more than a roofless Huayra: it is a distinct engineering project shaped by Pagani’s combination of composite technology, mechanical complexity and hand-built craftsmanship.

Horacio Pagani described the Huayra Roadster as the most complicated project his company had undertaken. He also likened the design ambition to shaping a car from a block of Carrara marble. More significantly from an engineering standpoint, Pagani presented the Roadster as the first car of its kind to be lighter than the corresponding coupe. That outcome required many components to be redesigned and was supported by the use of the Carbo-Triax HP52 composite material.

Production

Pagani announced a production run of 100 Huayra Roadsters. Bloomberg and Autocar reported that the allocation had sold out by the car’s public presentation in Geneva in 2017. Construction continued over several years, with a high degree of customer involvement in the specification of each car. In November 2020, MotorBox reported the delivery of the hundredth and final example, indicating that the originally announced series had reached completion by that point. Variants

The 2017 Huayra Roadster is the first open-top member of the Huayra family. It differs from the coupe through its removable roof, dedicated bodywork and revised chassis. It should not be confused with the later Huayra Roadster BC, which was developed as a more extreme and separately limited model. Contemporary reporting described two roof solutions for the original Roadster, including a rigid carbon-and-glass assembly and a soft roof. As with other Pagani creations, extensive customer specification could produce major differences in exterior finish, materials and cabin design from one car to another, while the model retained the same underlying mechanical identity. The Roadster’s defining distinction is therefore not just its open cockpit, but the engineering programme created around it.
