CLK-Klasse

1997 - 2003

Presented in Detroit in January 1997, the Mercedes-Benz CLK introduced a family of coupés and convertibles positioned between the C-Class and E-Class worlds. The first generation used the C 208 code for the coupé and A 208 for the convertible. Its appearance developed the four-elliptical-headlamp theme first shown on Mercedes-Benz’s 1993 coupé study, while its engineering drew heavily on the W 202 C-Class. A four-seat convertible followed, making its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1998. Across four-cylinder, V6, and V8 powertrains, the range covered everything from relaxed long-distance touring to distinctly sporting AMG versions. In the ScanRacer selection, the CLK-Klasse spans 1997 to 2003 and includes Coupé and Cabrio entries.

Model introduction

History

The CLK was launched as part of Mercedes-Benz’s broad product expansion during the 1990s. Its world premiere took place at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 1997, followed by European appearances in Amsterdam and Geneva. Mercedes-Benz presented it as an independent model family, although the C 208 coupé borrowed much of its mechanical hardware and floor structure from the W 202 C-Class. That combination gave the CLK its distinctive position: E-Class-inspired styling combined with a more compact C-Class-related technical foundation. The A 208 convertible was unveiled at Geneva in March 1998 and reached European dealers in June of that year. It retained four seats and used a fabric roof, with Mercedes-Benz placing particular emphasis on comfort and occupant protection. For the 2000 model year, the range received a substantial update involving around 800 changes to the coupé, more than 200 of them visible, along with new equipment and engines. The CLK 430 became available as a convertible, while the CLK 55 AMG joined the coupé line. The C 208 coupé was replaced by the 209 series. The A 208 convertible continued until it was succeeded by the A 209 in spring 2003, marking the end of the first CLK generation.

Generations

Two technical series should be distinguished within the period covered here. The first is the 208 series, introduced in 1997. The coupé carries the C 208 code and the convertible the A 208 code. The coupé uses a two-door body with frameless side windows, while the convertible retains a four-seat layout and fabric roof. The initial range included the CLK 200, CLK 230 Kompressor, and CLK 320. The V8-powered CLK 430 followed, and the CLK 55 AMG became the performance flagship after the 1999 model update. The second series is the 209. The new CLK Coupé was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in spring 2002. Mercedes-Benz described it as a thoroughly redesigned car, with a longer wheelbase, a new triple-link front axle, and rack-and-pinion steering. Its overall length increased to 4.64 metres, making it noticeably larger than the 208. Depending on market and model year, the range included the CLK 200 Kompressor, CLK 320, CLK 500, and CLK 55 AMG. The A 209 convertible followed in spring 2003. Within the ScanRacer timeframe, this changeover accounts for the coexistence of late 208 models and early 209 models.

Key differences

The coupé and convertible share the same design language and many of the same engines, but they serve different purposes. The C 208 benefits from the inherent stiffness of a closed body, easier access to the rear seats, and a classic grand-touring profile. The A 208 adds a fabric roof and structural reinforcement to maintain appropriate protection for an open body. Comfort equipment can also differ according to trim level, engine, and market. The transition from the 208 to the 209 was more substantial than a styling change. The 209 gained a larger body, a roomier cabin, and a redesigned chassis. Mercedes-Benz also introduced a new triple-link front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering. Engines, transmissions, and safety systems were updated as well. A single exterior detail should therefore not be used to infer the exact specification: model names, equipment lines, and technical features varied between countries and model years.

Photo recognition

The quickest way to identify a 208 CLK is its four-elliptical-headlamp face, with two lamps grouped on each side. A soft shoulder line, narrow grille, and frameless side windows give the coupé the unmistakable look of a late-1990s Mercedes-Benz. On the A 208 convertible, the fabric roof and four-seat body provide an immediate clue, although the overall design remains closely related to the coupé. The 209 CLK looks longer and wider. It retains the four-lamp theme, but uses a more stretched front design and a louvred grille with the Mercedes star positioned in the centre. Its proportions are more contemporary, and the dashboard is different from the 208 interior. For reliable identification, visual inspection should be supported by the model-series code shown on vehicle documents, the identification plate, or the VIN. Badges such as CLK 200, 230, 320, 430, 500, and AMG identify a version, but they do not always establish the exact market specification or model year.

Important versions

The 208 range began with the CLK 200, CLK 230 Kompressor, and CLK 320. The supercharged four-cylinder CLK 230 offered a sportier alternative, while the V6-powered CLK 320 focused more strongly on effortless grand-touring performance. The CLK 430 brought a V8 into the range and became an important version, particularly after the 2000 model update. The C 208 CLK 55 AMG, produced from 1999, represented the performance peak of the first series. The 209 introduced versions including the CLK 500 and CLK 55 AMG, the latter rated at 367 hp in Mercedes-Benz archive data. The CLK-GTR should be treated separately: it was a competition car and an extremely limited road-going series developed from the FIA GT programme, rather than a regular CLK trim level.
