Model introduction

Revealed in Monaco on May 22, 2024, the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed is a fully open two-seat performance car with no roof or windshield. It launches the Mythos series, a Mercedes-AMG program focused on highly exclusive, low-volume vehicles. Its most distinctive feature is a central HALO-style structure inspired by Formula 1, combined with a very low body, a long hood and a front-end treatment influenced by the AMG ONE. Mercedes-AMG has announced production limited to 250 examples. The production specification published by the manufacturer lists a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 producing 585 hp and 800 Nm, paired with an AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission. Claimed performance includes 0–100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 315 km/h.

History

The PureSpeed began as a concept unveiled during the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix. Mercedes-AMG presented it as the first model in the Mythos series, a family of exceptionally exclusive vehicles positioned at the top end of the brand’s portfolio. The concept immediately stood out because it had no roof, windshield or conventional front pillars. Instead, a tubular HALO structure connects the front section with the rear safety structure and protects both occupants. The idea draws on the safety device made famous by Formula 1 cars while being adapted for a road-going performance vehicle. The design references several periods of Mercedes-Benz racing history. Its overall shape recalls classic competition cars, while the structures behind the seats echo the fairings used on the 1955 300 SLR. Mercedes-AMG also linked the project to the brand’s 1924 Targa Florio victory and to the contemporary influence of the AMG ONE. The production car retained the concept’s central idea and radical open layout. Mercedes-AMG confirmed a limited run of 250 units. As a result, the PureSpeed belongs more to the world of collector-focused, experience-led performance cars than to a conventional high-volume sports-car range.

Generations

The Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed does not currently have multiple generations or body revisions comparable with a model produced over a long conventional lifecycle. Available information mainly distinguishes two development stages. The first is the Concept Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed, unveiled in Monaco in May 2024. It introduced the styling direction, the open two-seat layout and the HALO structure intended for the future Mythos model. The second stage is the production version shown at the end of 2024. It retains the concept’s defining features: no roof or windshield, a central protective structure, bespoke bodywork and a production limit of 250 cars. It adds a complete technical specification, including an AMG 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, 585 hp, 800 Nm, an AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission and active aerodynamic systems. It is therefore more accurate to describe the model’s development as a transition from concept to production than as two separate generations. For the 2024 model year, the available sources do not establish separate generations, engines or body styles. The PureSpeed is best understood as a standalone limited series rather than a model family renewed through a traditional generational cycle.

Key differences

The most important distinction concerns the vehicle’s status. The concept shown in May 2024 announced the first Mythos model and did not yet have a complete production specification. The production car retains the concept’s overall appearance but receives the final characteristics published by Mercedes-AMG, including the 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission, carbon-ceramic brakes and active aerodynamic systems. The PureSpeed is also fundamentally different from other AMG models because of its fully open body. It is not simply a convertible without a roof: the windshield and front pillars are absent as well, while the HALO structure forms part of the occupants’ protection system. The sources reviewed do not identify separate mechanical variants for the 2024 model. Documented differences therefore relate mainly to the transition from concept to production and to available finish or personalization themes, rather than to multiple power outputs.

Photo recognition

The PureSpeed is immediately identifiable by its unusual architecture. It is completely open and has neither a roof nor a windshield. A central tubular structure runs between the two occupants, replacing the visual role of conventional front pillars and forming the Formula 1-inspired HALO system. Two additional rollover-protection elements are concealed behind the seats. Its shape combines a very low nose, a long hood and a wide front end with a central air intake and a dark Mercedes emblem. The AMG ONE influence is particularly visible in the front treatment, while the two structures behind the headrests recall the 300 SLR. The forged 21-inch wheels use carbon-fiber covers: the rear covers are closed to reduce aerodynamic drag, while the front covers remain open to support airflow and brake cooling. Four exhaust outlets, visible carbon-fiber surfaces and the strictly two-seat configuration provide further visual clues. The absence of glass around the occupants is the clearest way to distinguish it from a conventional AMG roadster.

Important versions

The concept unveiled in Monaco in May 2024 was the project’s first public form. It previewed a two-seat car without a roof or windshield and announced the launch of the Mythos series. The later production version retains this architecture and becomes the first production model in the limited 250-unit family. Within the ScanRacer context provided, only one entry is available: the “Base” version associated with the 2024 year. The manufacturer sources reviewed do not describe multiple powertrain or output levels for that year. They do mention different presentation and personalization possibilities, including a Silver Arrow finish and a Motorsport styling package with several color themes. These details concern equipment and appearance, and should not automatically be treated as separate mechanical variants.
