In 2016, the Lamborghini Huracán LP580-2 held a distinct position within the range: it was based on the Huracán launched in 2014, but replaced all-wheel drive with rear-wheel drive. That choice clearly separated it from the more powerful LP 610-4, while keeping the naturally aspirated V10 that defines the family. With an announced output of 580 CV, it was aimed at a more direct and engaging driving experience. Like the rest of the Huracán line, it retained the model’s modern technical package, including the aluminum-and-carbon-fiber hybrid chassis, digital instrumentation, and dual-clutch transmission.

History

The Huracán is the direct successor to the Gallardo, which had served for more than a decade as Lamborghini’s entry-level V10 model. The family’s 2014 launch introduced a new technical base built around a naturally aspirated V10, a dual-clutch gearbox, and all-wheel drive on the LP 610-4. Within that framework, the LP580-2 was later added to the range and kept most of the same hardware, but changed the car’s character by switching to rear-wheel drive. It was therefore more than a power variation: it reflected a different way of interpreting the Huracán, with greater focus on driver involvement.

The Huracán is not officially divided into generations in the traditional sense; it is better understood as one model family that passed through several technical phases. The LP580-2 belongs to the first of these phases. It retains the family’s original shape and the equipment introduced at launch, while standing out through its drivetrain and its more driver-focused setup. Lamborghini would later develop more extreme, more technological, and more specialized derivatives, but the LP580-2 remains one of the variants that makes the range easier to understand by showing that a Huracán could also exist in a simpler, more purely rear-driven form.

Evolution

Compared with the LP 610-4, the LP580-2 mainly changes the drivetrain. Moving to rear-wheel drive alters how the car delivers its dynamic qualities and gives it a more immediate character. The dossier emphasizes a more engaging setup for the driver, which matches this simpler drivetrain concept. Power is also listed at 580 CV, but the car keeps the core elements of the first Huracán: a naturally aspirated V10, a seven-speed LDF gearbox, a hybrid chassis, and digital instrumentation.

Within the family, this version represents a balance between entry-level access and a more visceral driving experience. It is not aimed at the maximum efficiency of later derivatives such as the Performante, nor at the more electronic control strategies of the EVO. Its appeal lies in a more mechanical reading of the Huracán, with less drivetrain complexity and a stronger emphasis on driving pleasure.

Variants

The LP580-2 stands out first and foremost because it is rear-wheel drive, while the LP 610-4 uses all-wheel drive. That is the key difference for understanding where it sits in the range, even if it is not always obvious at a glance. Visually, it keeps the original Huracán design, which links it more closely to the launch version than to later developments. It does not adopt the extreme elements of the Performante, the specialized solutions of the STO, or the technical refinements of the EVO.

Within the family hierarchy, the LP580-2 appears as a simpler variant with a stronger focus on rear-drive behavior. It sits alongside the LP 610-4 rather than trying to outperform it on every front. Its identity is built mainly around its drivetrain choice and its more direct driving approach, making it easier to distinguish technically than visually.
