Ford Mustang Convertible 2004

The 2004 Ford Mustang Convertible belongs to the Mustang’s fourth generation, a period that brought the model back to a more aggressive design direction after earlier changes in its evolution. The open-top body keeps the Mustang’s recognizable identity, with the galloping-horse grille, muscular proportions, and a profile that is easy to identify. Within the Mustang family, the convertible is one of the classic body styles that appeared as early as the first generation. In 2004, it therefore represents continuity with the model’s long history while reflecting the styling themes of the 1994–2004 generation.

History

The Ford Mustang was introduced in 1964 and quickly became an automotive icon thanks to its style and performance image. Its early commercial success was remarkable, with more than 400,000 units sold in its first year alone. Over time, the model passed through several generations, each bringing its own stylistic and technical changes. The first generation established the pony car formula with body styles such as the Hardtop and the Convertible, while later generations shifted between compactness, efficiency, and a stronger visual identity. The fourth generation, which includes the 2004 model year, ran from 1994 to 2004 and is described as a return to the brand’s roots with a more aerodynamic design. In that context, the 2004 Convertible continues a long-running Mustang tradition.

Evolution

The 2004 Mustang Convertible sits at the end of the fourth generation, a phase that introduced a more aggressive style than earlier Mustangs. Compared with older versions, the emphasis is on more contemporary proportions and a body shape with a more aerodynamic feel. Even so, the convertible keeps the Mustang’s familiar identity cues, including the galloping-horse grille and muscular stance. In the model’s broader evolution, this version represents one of the historic body styles associated with the Mustang name since 1964. It therefore remains faithful to the original spirit while belonging to a transitional period just before the fifth generation arrived in 2005.

Variants

The dossier highlights several major Mustang categories and notable versions, but for 2004 the Convertible should mainly be understood as the open-top body style of the fourth generation. The first generation had already offered body styles such as the Hardtop and the Convertible, firmly establishing this configuration as part of the model’s identity. Over the decades, other famous variants helped build the Mustang’s reputation, including the Shelby GT350, Mach 1, Boss 302, and GT500, although the dossier does not assign those names to the 2004 version. For the 2004 model year, the main distinction is therefore the convertible body and its place within the fourth-generation styling language. Visual identification still relies on Mustang hallmarks such as the recognizable grille and muscular stance.
