Ferrari 458 Speciale 2013

2013

The 2013 Ferrari 458 Speciale belongs to the 458 family as the most track-focused roadgoing derivative mentioned in the dossier. It keeps the mid-rear V8 berlinetta layout introduced by the 458 Italia, but Ferrari developed it with a more radical brief: output rises to 605 hp, mass is reduced, and aerodynamic work is taken further. The brand also highlights the Side Slip Angle Control system, intended to better manage the car’s behavior near the limit. Within the 458 range, the Speciale stands as the sharpest expression of the formula, carrying the model’s competition-inspired approach to a higher level.

History

The 458 Speciale appeared in 2013 within a 458 family that does not evolve through strict generations, but through successive derivatives built around a common technical core. That core dates back to the 458 Italia, unveiled in 2009 as Ferrari’s new mid-rear V8 berlinetta. Ferrari described it with an all-new aluminum chassis, improved torsional rigidity compared with the F430, and electronics inspired by racing experience. The shared mechanical package features a naturally aspirated 4.5-liter V8, a seven-speed dual-clutch F1 transmission, and rear-wheel drive. In 2011, the Spider added a retractable hardtop. The 2013 Speciale pushes the formula further, with a focus on lower weight, sharper response, and greater control. Ferrari quotes 605 hp, active aerodynamics, and the Side Slip Angle Control system. In 2014, the Speciale A transferred that philosophy to an open body. The 458 Italia and Spider were later replaced by the 488 GTB and 488 Spider in 2015, marking the move to turbocharged V8 power.

Evolution

Compared with the 458 Italia, the Speciale does not alter the underlying layout, but it uses that architecture for a more focused performance role. The dossier describes it as an evolution centered on lower weight, sharper throttle response, and improved vehicle control. Output reaches 605 hp, above the 458 Italia’s 570 hp. Ferrari also mentions a lower dry weight, wider tires, active aerodynamics, and Side Slip Angle Control. Together, these elements point to a car aimed at more intensive sporting use, with greater precision and better high-speed stability. The overall shape remains that of a mid-rear-engined 458 berlinetta, but the technical and visual presentation is more aggressive than the Italia’s.

Variants

Within the 458 family, the Speciale sits above the Italia and Spider in terms of tuning and focus. The Italia is the foundation, while the Spider carries that base mechanical package into a retractable-hardtop configuration. The Speciale differs most clearly through its 605 hp output, reduced mass, and more advanced driver-assistance systems. The 2014 Speciale A carries the same philosophy into an open-bodied form and is described as a limited special series. To identify a Speciale, the most useful clues are its more aggressive appearance, more pronounced aerodynamic details, specific wheels, and wider tires than those fitted to the 458 Italia. Since options and liveries can change the look, checking the chassis remains the safer way to confirm the variant.
