BMW Z4 2009

The 2009 Z4 Base marks the move to the E89 generation and to a more versatile interpretation of the model. Its most visible change is the retractable hardtop, which alters both the shape and the use of the car compared with a traditional soft-top roadster. That solution makes the Z4 feel closer to a sealed, everyday convertible.

Compared with the E85, the underlying rear-wheel-drive layout remains, but the overall character becomes fuller and more comfort-oriented. The Base version therefore sits at the start of the E89 range, before other derivatives were added for different markets. It sets the tone for the new generation rather than pursuing the more extreme focus of the earlier M cars.

Within the Z4 story, the 2009 Base version belongs to the second generation and mainly serves as the entry point to the E89 range. The dossier notes that the E89 launched with several inline six-cylinder engines and was later broadened according to market and year. That means Base does not refer here to a single fully detailed mechanical specification, but to the standard launch version.

To place it correctly, it must be separated from the earlier E85 and E86 cars, as well as from the more focused M variants of the first family. Unlike the original Z4 lineup, the E89 no longer splits roadster and coupe bodies because it uses a retractable hardtop instead. The 2009 Base is therefore a Z4 roadster with a folding hardtop, without the specific sporting emphasis of the most extreme versions.
