The 2018 BMW 8 Series Cabrio belongs to the model’s second generation, revived by BMW under the G14 code for the convertible body style, as part of the 8 Series comeback after a long absence. It continues the idea of a grand open-top luxury car, with a more modern presentation and smoother surfacing than the first 8 Series. In the range, it sits alongside the coupé and the Gran Coupé, keeping a focus on luxury and performance. BMW introduced it when the 8 Series returned to replace the 6 Series.

History

The BMW 8 Series was first revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1989 as a more ambitious and more expensive proposal than the 6 Series it was meant to surpass. The first generation, known as the E31, entered production in 1990 and ended in 1999. It made its mark through several technical milestones, including the first road car to combine a V12 engine with a 6-speed manual transmission, as well as being among the early adopters of electronic throttle control.

After that chapter, the 8 Series returned in 2018 with the G15/G14/G16 generation. That revival brought the name back in a broader lineup made up of a coupé, a cabriolet, and a Gran Coupé. The 2018 Cabrio therefore belongs to this new era, with a more contemporary interpretation of the grand touring concept. The new family also introduced inline-six engines, while more extreme or more luxurious derivatives later expanded the range.

Production

Production of the G15/G14/G16 generation began in late 2018 and continued until 2026, with more than 48,000 units produced. The 2018 Cabrio belongs to this production period of the second generation. The dossier does not give a separate run rate or a dedicated volume for the convertible version.

Evolution

Compared with the first 8 Series, the 2018 Cabrio shows a clear shift in philosophy and styling. The E31 generation used a wedge-shaped silhouette with a long hood and a steep rear end. By contrast, the G14 adopts softer and more modern lines, suited to a more fluid reading of BMW’s current design language.

On the technology side, the 2018 revival benefits from newer equipment, including a 12.3-inch infotainment display and an illuminated grille mentioned in the dossier. That places the convertible in a more sophisticated environment than the original 8 Series. Even so, the open-top version retains the spirit of a prestige grand tourer, with emphasis on comfort and image.

Variants

Within the 2018-relaunched 8 Series family, the Cabrio is the two-door open-top version. It shares the range’s overall positioning with the G15 coupé and the G16 Gran Coupé, while using its own body style. The dossier also links this generation to inline-six engines, alongside more exclusive derivatives such as the BMW M8 and the Alpina B8.

For easy recognition, the 8 Series Cabrio can be identified by its modern silhouette, BMW’s twin-kidney front end, and its two doors. In the spirit of the range, it sits on the luxury-and-performance side rather than the practicality side. The 2018 Cabrio is therefore one of the key forms taken by the 8 Series comeback.
