BMW 3 Series Wagon 2022

The BMW 3 Series Wagon 2022 belongs to the long Touring tradition within the 3 Series range. BMW’s 3 Series began as a compact rear-wheel-drive car and, over time, expanded into several body styles, including the wagon. In 2022, the Wagon version carries forward a well-established idea in the model’s history: combining the character of a sporty sedan with the practicality of a more versatile body. The dossier does not specify any unique equipment or engine for this year, but it does place the car clearly within the seventh generation, introduced from 2018 onward.

History

The BMW 3 Series began on 2 May 1975 at the Munich plant under the E21 code. It started as a compact BMW with a longitudinal engine layout and rear-wheel drive, while establishing its own identity. The first cars were two-door models, and six-cylinder engines arrived in 1977. From there, the story was mainly about broadening the range of body styles and uses.

The E30 generation was a major step, adding a four-door sedan in 1983, the convertible and M3 in 1985, and the Touring in 1987. It also brought the first diesel models and some all-wheel-drive versions. The E36 and E46 continued the move upmarket by increasing interior room, smoothing the styling, and strengthening the diesel offering. Later, the E90 family emphasized technology, while the F30 split the coupé and convertible into the 4 Series line. The G20 generation, introduced from 2018, extends this lineage, and the 2022 Wagon version sits directly within it.

Evolution

In 2022, the Wagon version of the 3 Series is best understood through the evolution of BMW’s body styles. The dossier notes that the Touring first appeared with the E30 and then remained an important variant through later generations. The Wagon therefore follows the logic of a sporty family car, offering more versatility while keeping the 3 Series identity.

The G20/G21 generation, introduced from 2018 onward, continues this approach with a clearer separation between sedan and wagon. The dossier gives no technical detail specific to the 2022 version, nor any exact difference from another model year, but it does place the car within the latest phase of the lineage. In that context, the Wagon stands as one of the most practical expressions of the model.

Variants

Among the variants named in the dossier, the Wagon stands alongside the Sedan and Touring as a key illustration of how the 3 Series evolved from a sporty saloon into a more versatile range. The 2022 Wagon belongs to that BMW estate tradition, aiming to combine useful load space with sedan-like driving character.

The dossier also mentions other body styles that mattered in different generations, including the Coupé, Convertible, Compact, and Gran Turismo. For 2022, however, the Wagon is the most directly relevant shape within the 3 Series family. No specific mechanical variant is given for this year, so it should be described generically as a body-style derivative within the G20 generation.
