BMW 3 Series Coupé 1982

The 1982 BMW 3 Series Coupé represents the tail end of the first generation E21 lineup. This model upheld BMW’s early vision of a compact, sporty rear-wheel-drive car with a longitudinal engine and two-door design. At this time, the 3 Series was recognized for its simplicity and driver-focused approach. Despite the E30 generation debuting in 1982, the E21 Coupé maintained the original concept of a clean and functional sports compact just before the series expanded into a wider variety of body styles and options.

History

The BMW 3 Series launched in 1975 under the E21 code as a compact, rear-wheel-drive vehicle with a longitudinal engine, starting mainly with two-door body styles. The 1982 Coupé is part of this initial generation, which was limited to such compact sporty configurations. Around 1982, E21 production was ending while the new E30 generation was being introduced, broadening the lineup with four-door sedans, convertibles, and Touring variants. Nonetheless, the E21 Coupé remains a hallmark of the 3 Series’ first chapter, featuring a straightforward design focused on sportiness.

Evolution

The 1982 Coupé belongs to the closing phase of the first-generation E21, just prior to the introduction of the E30 which marked a significant evolution with more body styles and engine options. Compared to later generations, the E21 Coupé holds on to a boxy design and a more limited engine lineup. It represents the original concept of the model before it expanded into greater versatility and complexity. This car exemplifies BMW’s core idea of a compact driving-focused vehicle emphasizing simplicity and sportiness, traits shared with the preceding models.

Variants

In 1982, the Coupé was the sole body style offered in the first generation of the 3 Series before the lineup expanded with the arrival of the E30. This version is notable for its defining two-door profile which characterized the initial 3 Series. Unlike later generations, additional body styles such as four-door sedans, convertibles, or Touring wagons were not yet introduced. Thus, the 1982 Coupé remained basic yet effective, embodying the core of a compact BMW sports car.
