The Audi S6 e-tron Avant is an electric estate introduced in July 2024 and opened for European orders from September that year. Built on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE), it combines two electric motors, quattro all-wheel drive and a 370 kW system output, rising to 405 kW with Launch Control. Audi quotes 0–100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, a governed top speed of 240 km/h and a WLTP range of more than 640 kilometres, depending on specification and market. Its Avant body preserves the practical character expected of a family estate, while the S designation brings a sharper performance focus to the A6 e-tron range.

History

The S6 e-tron Avant belongs to the new A6 e-tron family unveiled by Audi on July 31, 2024. The range is the brand’s second model family based on the PPE platform, following the Q6 e-tron. Audi presented both Sportback and Avant body styles, together with several power levels. The S6 is the performance-oriented derivative, positioned above the rear-wheel-drive A6 e-tron performance. It uses a 100 kWh gross high-voltage battery, with 94.9 kWh net capacity in Audi’s published technical data, and an 800-volt electrical system. The strongest versions were among the first A6 e-tron models to become available, while additional variants expanded the range later in 2024. As with earlier Audi S6 models, the concept combines strong performance, long-distance comfort and estate-car practicality, but its powertrain is entirely electric rather than petrol- or diesel-based.

Anecdotes

The Avant name remains central to the model’s identity: Audi did not limit its new electric performance technology to a fastback body. The S6 e-tron Avant therefore retains the estate shape long associated with Audi’s high-performance large cars. Another notable technical detail is that its electric quattro system does not use a mechanical propeller shaft between the axles. Independent motors control front and rear drive, allowing torque distribution to be adjusted rapidly according to driving conditions.

Production

Audi introduced the S6 Avant e-tron in 2024 and began taking European orders from September that year. The public documents consulted provide technical specifications, power outputs and certified efficiency data, but they do not disclose a total production figure for the S6 e-tron Avant. It is therefore not possible to assign a reliable number of vehicles built or describe the model as a limited production series. Sales and manufacturing totals may also differ between markets and calendar years. Any unsupported estimate would be speculative.

Press reception

Early road tests generally highlighted the compromise targeted by the S6 e-tron Avant. Auto Express described it as fast, comfortable and refined enough for family use, while noting its substantial size and weight. The publication also judged that the S6 added a stronger dynamic character to the wider A6 e-tron range. German testing reports likewise focused on the combination of electric performance, comfort and usable range. These impressions apply to specific test cars and driving conditions; they do not replace WLTP figures and should not be treated as representative of real-world consumption for every driver.

Evolution

The major evolution is the move to a dedicated electric architecture. Instead of a front-mounted combustion engine, the S6 e-tron Avant uses one electric motor on each axle and a variable quattro system with a rear-biased operating character. The range also introduces two distinct body styles: the lower Sportback and the taller, more versatile Avant. Audi positions the S6 separately from the rear-wheel-drive A6 e-tron performance, with the S6 delivering 370 kW rather than 270 kW. Fast charging, a 100 kWh battery and an 800-volt electrical system make electrical efficiency and charging capability central parts of the model’s development, alongside the traditional S6 emphasis on acceleration and high-speed stability.

Variants

The S6 e-tron is offered in two body styles. The Sportback has a lower roofline and a lower official WLTP energy-consumption range, published at 16.7–15.7 kWh/100 km. The S6 Avant e-tron places greater emphasis on rear-seat and cargo versatility, with Audi quoting combined consumption of 17.4–16.4 kWh/100 km. Both versions use quattro all-wheel drive, deliver 370 kW of system output and can reach 405 kW with Launch Control. They are distinct from the A6 e-tron performance, which uses rear-wheel drive and produces 270 kW. Certified range, consumption and some technical figures may change with wheel sizes, optional equipment, testing conditions and market-specific configurations.
