Audi R8 Coupé 2015

The 2015 Audi R8 Coupé marks the arrival of the model’s second generation, with a sharper and more angular shape than the original series. In the lineup, it appears at the point where Audi keeps the naturally aspirated V10 while extensively updating the chassis, electronics, and transmission. The Coupé is defined by its fixed roof, unlike the Spyder’s soft top. This version reflects the R8’s concept as a supercar intended for everyday use, rather than a mere road-legal offshoot of a racing prototype.

History

The R8 name first comes from Audi’s endurance racing world, and that sporting background shaped the road car’s image. The racing prototype entered at Le Mans from 2000 built an impressive record, with five wins between 2000 and 2005 and 63 victories in 80 sports car races according to Audi. The production car, however, remained a separate project: it was designed as a sports car suitable for everyday use, with a broader road-going purpose than a simple road-legal race car.

The Le Mans quattro concept, shown in 2003, previewed the general proportions and architecture of the production R8. The first generation, unveiled in 2006 and hand-built at Böllinger Höfe near Neckarsulm, started with a 4.2-litre FSI V8 before adopting the 5.2-litre FSI V10 derived from the engine family associated with Lamborghini. The Spyder later broadened the range. In 2015, the second generation arrived with a more taut design and a naturally aspirated V10 kept at the centre of the line-up.

Production

The first-generation R8 is hand-built at Böllinger Höfe near Neckarsulm, and the dossier links that manufacturing tradition to the model’s image. For the second generation introduced in 2015, no further details are provided here about output, volumes, or any workshop changes. The 2015–2018 period is only described as the initial phase of the second generation, before later versions and the next facelift.

Evolution

The 2015 R8 Coupé sits at the turning point where Audi thoroughly renews its sports car while preserving its core identity. Compared with the first generation, the body becomes cleaner, sharper, and visually wider at the front. Aerodynamic elements are more closely integrated into the bodywork, giving the car a more technically mature appearance without breaking away from the model’s familiar cues.

The most significant changes concern the mechanical package and transmission. The naturally aspirated V10 remains the foundation of the second generation, whereas the first generation had also been offered with a V8. The seven-speed S tronic is paired with the main versions, and quattro remains the dominant drivetrain. In that context, the 2015 Coupé stands as the new benchmark in the range before later developments such as the V10 RWS, which introduced rear-wheel drive on an Audi road car of this level.

Variants

The 2015 R8 Coupé belongs to the second generation launched in 2015, where the V10 becomes the reference engine. The dossier mentions several power levels across the range, but does not specify the exact figures or market-specific naming here. For identification, the Coupé is mainly distinguished by its fixed roof, while the Spyder uses a soft top and a different roofline.

During this period, quattro all-wheel drive remains the usual solution on the main derivatives. A notable exception comes later with the V10 RWS, which adopts rear-wheel drive only. Other variants such as V10 plus, GT, or performance appear within the covered period, but their exact positioning depends on market and model year. For the 2015 Coupé, the key point is its role as the baseline of the second generation, paired with the naturally aspirated V10 and, on the main versions, the seven-speed S tronic.
