Naming
Volvo naming explained: XC60, T8, B5, and EX90
Decode a Volvo name: the S, V, C, and XC letters, the 40-60-90 size rank, why a T8 is not a V8, and the new EX logic that reverses everything.

Direct answer
How do you read a Volvo name?
In “XC60 B5”, XC stands for Cross Country and marks an SUV, the 60 gives the mid-range size rank, and B5 the engine — B for mild hybrid. The number after the letter never indicates a cylinder count.
- Read the letters: S for saloon, V for estate, XC for SUV, C for coupé.
- Read the number: 40 compact, 60 mid-size, 90 large.
- Decode the engine: T for petrol, D for diesel, B for mild hybrid.
- Never read the engine number as a cylinder count.
Why these names look unreadable
Volvo has the most regular naming of all: two letters for the body, one number for the size. Once you know the grid, you can place any model without hesitation.
The trap is elsewhere, and it is a nasty one because it looks like mechanical information. The number after T, D, or B looks exactly like a cylinder count. It is not one, and never was.
“XC60 B5 AWD Ultimate” piece by piece
| Piece | What it means |
|---|---|
| XC | The body: XC for Cross Country, the SUVs. S is the saloon, V the estate, C the coupé or compact. |
| 60 | The size rank, shared across bodies: 40 for compacts, 60 for mid-size, 90 for the largest. |
| B5 | The engine: B for mild hybrid, T for petrol, D for diesel. The number gives a power level. That number does not count cylinders: see below. |
| AWD | All-wheel drive. Volvo uses the plain English acronym where others invent a trade name. |
| Ultimate | The trim. Since 2022 Volvo stacks Core, Plus, then Ultimate. |
The grid: a letter for the shape, a number for the size
| Letter or number | Family |
|---|---|
| S40 / S60 / S90 | The saloons, S for Saloon. |
| V40 / V60 / V90 | The estates, V for Versatility — the brand’s historic specialty. |
| XC40 / XC60 / XC90 | The SUVs, XC for Cross Country. |
| C30 / C40 / C70 | The coupés and compacts, a less regular family. |
| EX30 / EX90 / ES90 | The recent electric range, which reverses the letter order. |

Where the rule no longer holds
The number after T, D, or B does not count cylinders. This is the most common mistake, and the most understandable: a T8 looks like a V8, a D5 like a five-cylinder. Neither is. Since 2014 Volvo has used a single engine block — a two-litre four-cylinder — split into power levels. A T8 is a 2.0 plug-in hybrid, not a V8.
The letters moved for electric cars. A Volvo SUV was called XC90; its electric equivalent is the EX90. The C of Cross Country vanished, the E of electric moved to the front, and the order reversed. The C40 Recharge even changed name mid-life to become the EC40.
The old numbering really was decodable, and no longer is. On a 1960s Volvo 144, the first digit gave the series, the second the cylinder count, and the third the number of doors. That logic was lost with the 240 and 740, where the last digit stopped meaning anything.
Polestar became a competitor. The name marked Volvo’s performance work, then a trim, before becoming an independent brand in 2017. Yet “Polestar Engineered” remains an option in the Volvo catalogue: a separate brand’s name, sold as equipment.
The suffixes worth knowing
| Mention | Meaning |
|---|---|
| T | Petrol. The number that follows is a power level. |
| D | Diesel, on generations before electrification. |
| B | Mild hybrid, the current generation of combustion engines. |
| Recharge | Plug-in hybrid or electric depending on the model. |
| AWD | All-wheel drive. |
| Cross Country | A raised estate, halfway between the V and the XC. |
| R-Design | A sporty-looking trim, with no specific mechanicals. |
| Polestar Engineered | A genuine performance package, bearing the name of a brand that became independent. |
The trap: a T8 is not a V8
This is the most frequent misreading of a recent Volvo, and it bears directly on what you think you are buying.
Since 2014 every combustion Volvo shares a two-litre four-cylinder. The number after the letter ranks power levels within that single family: a T5 and a T8 have the same cylinder count and displacement, the latter adding a plug-in hybrid system. There have been no five- or eight-cylinder engines in the range for years.
The other confusion sets R-Design against Polestar Engineered. The first is a trim: wheels, upholstery, bumpers. The second is a genuine package — adjustable Öhlins dampers, Brembo brakes, revised engine — recognizable by its gold seatbelts, a detail no trim reproduces.
Three naming systems in sixty years
Volvo has no chassis code in common use. What dates a Volvo is the naming system itself: the brand has changed it twice, and each change marks an era.
The latest is under way: electric models drop the S / V / XC grid for EX and ES, which will leave two systems coexisting for several years.
| Code | Generation |
|---|---|
| 140 / 240 / 740 / 940 | The numbers-only era, from the 1960s to the 1990s. |
| S / V / XC + chiffre | The current grid, adopted in the mid-1990s. |
| EX / ES + chiffre | The electric range, since 2023. |
| Recharge | The transitional suffix, used before the EX models arrived. |

Frequently asked questions
What does T8 mean at Volvo?
T marks a petrol powertrain and the 8 a power level, not a cylinder count. A T8 is a two-litre four-cylinder with a plug-in hybrid system. Volvo has used a single engine block since 2014.
What is the difference between S60, V60, and XC60?
The number is identical, so the size is too. Only the body changes: S for saloon, V for estate, XC for SUV. They are three shapes of the same car.
What does B5 mean at Volvo?
B marks a mild-hybrid petrol engine, and the 5 its power level. That letter replaced T and D across the recent combustion range.
Why EX90 and not electric XC90?
Because Volvo adopted a separate naming for electric cars: E for electric, then X for SUV or S for saloon. That reverses the letter order compared with XC90.
R-Design or Polestar Engineered?
R-Design is a styling trim. Polestar Engineered is a genuine mechanical package — Öhlins suspension, Brembo brakes — recognizable by its gold seatbelts.
And if all you have is the car in front of you?
A badge can be removed, swapped, or added: it is one of the most common modifications. When the name is missing or looks wrong, the car itself remains — its silhouette, lights, and grille. That is where photo recognition takes over from decoding.
