History

The XC60 first appeared in 2008 at the Geneva Motor Show, when Volvo was establishing itself more firmly in the compact luxury SUV market. It is based on Volvo’s P3 platform and shared some technologies with the 2007 Land Rover Freelander, at a time when both brands were under Ford ownership. Production began in Europe in the third quarter of 2008, then expanded to North America in 2009.

In 2010, Volvo introduced an R-Design version with a more expressive and sporty character. Three years later, the XC60 was facelifted, receiving exterior and interior updates to keep the design and equipment current. The 2013 Base version sits in this mid-cycle phase of the first generation: it benefits from the 2013 update without moving toward the more distinctive positioning of the more specialized trims. The second generation would not arrive until 2017, on a different technical foundation.
