Volvo 340-Series Hatch 1976

Introduced in 1976, the Volvo 343 marked Volvo Car BV’s entry into Europe’s compact-car market. This three-door hatchback combined a two-and-a-half-box profile with a large tailgate whose trailing edge formed a small spoiler-like lip. Its layout was unusual for the period: a 1,397 cc four-cylinder engine sat at the front, while the continuously variable Variomatic transmission was mounted at the rear beside the differential. History

The Volvo 343 appeared in the winter of 1976 as the first completely new car from Volvo Car BV, Volvo’s Dutch passenger-car operation. It was aimed at Europe’s growing compact segment and used a three-door hatchback body with a tailgate and a flexible luggage area. At launch, the range was deliberately straightforward: a 1.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a continuously variable Variomatic automatic transmission. The transmission reflected DAF’s engineering heritage while being offered in a car carrying Volvo branding. Mounted at the rear beside the differential, it created an unusual drivetrain layout and helped improve weight distribution. The rear suspension used a De Dion arrangement, another technically distinctive feature. During its production life, the 343 received changes to its appearance, engines and gearboxes. The most substantial visual revision arrived in autumn 1981, bringing a redesigned front end and a new interior. Volvo lists production of the 343 from 1976 to 1990.

Variants

For the 1976 hatchback, the relevant original designation is Volvo 343. The first digit identified the 300 family, the second referred to the number of cylinders and the final digit indicated the number of doors in Volvo’s early naming system. It was therefore a three-door compact hatchback. The 345 arrived in 1979 for the 1980 model year, adding two rear doors while retaining the general hatchback concept. From 1982 onward, the 340 and 360 names increasingly replaced the earlier 343 and 345 badges. The 340 represented the more mainstream versions, while the 360 occupied a higher position with stronger engines and additional equipment. A four-door sedan body was later added to the 300 family, but it should not be confused with the three-door 1976 hatchback represented here.
