History

The 2021 Sports Tourer belongs to the Astra K generation, introduced in the mid-2010s and updated during the later part of its career. It uses a compact front-engine layout and carries over the main developments introduced on the five-door Astra: controlled weight, a more modern cabin and a broader range of driver-assistance equipment. The estate body adds an extended roofline, roof rails and a more useful rear compartment than the compact hatchback. Vauxhall’s 2021 documentation lists an overall length of 4,702 mm and a maximum luggage capacity of 1,630 litres. In the UK, the range combined petrol and diesel powertrains certified to the RDE2 emissions standard. The 2021 model year was also a transition period: the new Astra was unveiled in July 2021, but the Sports Tourer covered here is the outgoing model sold before the complete redesign reached the estate range.

The final Astra built at Ellesmere Port on 6 April 2022 was a Sports Tourer SRi Nav fitted with a 1.2-litre engine and a manual gearbox. That car marked the end of British production for the Astra K. Auto Express reported that the plant had built around four million Astras across seven generations since Astra production began there in 1981.

No reliable public figure isolates global production of the 2021 Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer. The car belongs to the Astra K family, which was produced in the United Kingdom and at other European sites depending on the version and market. Astra production at Ellesmere Port ended on 6 April 2022 after several decades at the plant. The final British-built example was a Sports Tourer, giving this body style a distinctive place in the closing chapter of the model’s UK manufacturing story. Frequently quoted Ellesmere Port totals cover several Astra generations and should not be treated as production figures for the 2021 Sports Tourer alone.

Press reception

Automotive reviewers generally credited the Astra Sports Tourer with useful practicality, reasonable rear space and a competitive luggage compartment. In its assessment of the 2016-2022 generation, Autocar awarded the car 8 out of 10 and highlighted its practicality, rear headroom and the performance of selected diesel versions. The same review noted that the interior finish lagged behind several rivals and that the SRi trim did not turn the estate into a genuinely sporting car. The overall judgement was therefore that of a sensible, capable family estate rather than a car designed primarily around driving excitement.

Evolution

The main 2021 evolution of the Astra Sports Tourer involved changes to the range structure and powertrain line-up. Vauxhall documents issued during the year list several configurations, including 110PS, 130PS and 145PS versions of the 1.2 Turbo petrol engine, along with 105PS and 122PS versions of the 1.5 Turbo D. An automatic transmission was available with selected derivatives, while other versions used a manual gearbox. Trim levels and equipment also changed between the beginning of the year and spring, with versions such as Business Edition Nav, SRi Nav and Griffin Edition appearing in the UK price guides. The car nevertheless remained technically part of the facelifted Astra K family and did not adopt the styling or platform of the following generation.

Variants

The 2021 UK Astra Sports Tourer range varied according to the date of the price guide and the chosen trim. Early-year documentation listed versions such as SE, Business Edition Nav, SRi Nav and Elite Nav Premium, with petrol and diesel engines available across the range. The guide issued in April then showed Business Edition Nav models with either the 1.2 Turbo 130PS or 1.5 Turbo D 122PS, SRi Nav models with the 1.2 Turbo 145PS or 1.5 Turbo D, and a Griffin Edition using the 1.2 Turbo 145PS. Equipment differences included navigation, wheel designs, comfort features and driver-assistance systems. Because names and availability changed during the model year, each derivative should be considered alongside the date of the relevant Vauxhall price guide.
