History
The Clio first arrived in 1990 to replace the Renault 5 and Supercinq, while giving Renault a more modern image in the small-car class. The first generation quickly established itself thanks to rounded styling, three- and five-door body styles, and Energy petrol engines. It also opened the door to more distinctive versions such as the 16S, Williams, and Baccara. Recognition came early with the 1991 European Car of the Year award.
The Clio II, launched in 1998, followed with an even softer approach. The focus was no longer just compact dimensions, but also cabin comfort, safety, and a more contemporary presentation. This generation also introduced the Renault Sport lineage and welcomed the 1.5 dCi direct-injection diesel. In 2001, the Hatch version therefore represented a mature Clio in its career, designed as a practical and easy-to-use hatchback rather than a dramatic special variant.

Compared with the Clio I, the 2001 Clio II adopts a more organic shape and a more modern atmosphere.
