Presented in production form at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2013, the Porsche 918 Spyder combined a naturally aspirated 4.6-litre V8 with two electric motors. The plug-in hybrid system produced 887 hp and drove all four wheels through an electric motor mounted on the front axle. This layout allowed the 918 Spyder to move from near-silent electric running to a track-focused setup, with five selectable operating modes. Its carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic monocoque, rear-axle steering and variable aerodynamics reflected an unusually technical approach to the sports car. The “Base” designation is treated here as a catalogue label: Porsche marketed the vehicle as the 918 Spyder, with options including the separately specified Weissach Package.

History

The 918 Spyder project began with a concept unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010. Following the strong public response, Porsche approved series development during the summer of that year. After roughly three years of engineering work, the production model was shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show in autumn 2013. Assembly began at Zuffenhausen in September 2013, inside a dedicated facility where the cars were built largely by hand. The first customer cars were shipped at the end of March 2014. The 918 Spyder followed technologically ambitious Porsche models such as the 959, 911 GT1 and Carrera GT, while introducing a new emphasis on plug-in hybrid propulsion. Porsche designed it to combine efficiency, road usability and circuit performance rather than focusing on a single role. Production ended in June 2015 after 21 months, when the 918th car left the Zuffenhausen line.

Anecdotes

In September 2013, a 918 Spyder fitted with production tyres and the Weissach Package completed the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6 minutes 57 seconds. It became the first road-approved car to break the seven-minute barrier on the circuit. Porsche attributed the result to the combined work of electric all-wheel drive, energy recuperation, active aerodynamics and electronic torque management rather than to engine output alone.

Production

Production of the Porsche 918 Spyder was limited to 918 cars, matching the model’s name. Assembly of the first series-production vehicles began on 18 September 2013 in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, inside a facility created specifically for the project. Porsche stated that approximately 100 hours were required to move one car through the 18 assembly stations and its quality-control procedures. Manufacturing lasted 21 months and ended in June 2015 with the final example. Porsche’s 2013 annual report records 35 cars produced at Zuffenhausen during that year. The company also reported that the planned 918 units were sold within roughly one year, underlining the model’s unusually restricted production volume.

Press reception

Automotive publications generally regarded the 918 Spyder as a major demonstration of what plug-in hybrid technology could achieve in a high-performance sports car. Top Gear highlighted its acceleration, all-wheel-drive traction and ability to remain usable on the road rather than behaving solely like a circuit machine. Autocar praised the car’s response, the immediacy of its electric torque and the effectiveness of its all-wheel-drive system, describing it as an exceptional technical achievement. Period road tests naturally compared it with the McLaren P1 and Ferrari LaFerrari. The verdicts were not entirely identical: some testers preferred the McLaren’s more aggressive character, while the 918 Spyder was widely recognised for offering an unusually broad range of abilities, from electric driving to record-setting track performance.

Evolution

The 918 Spyder evolved from the 2010 concept into the production car unveiled in 2013 without abandoning its central idea: a combustion engine at the rear, an electric motor working through the rear axle and a separate electric motor driving the front axle. The production model added five selectable driving modes, sophisticated energy recuperation and electronically managed all-wheel drive. The main customer-focused evolution was the Weissach Package. It concentrated on lower mass and circuit efficiency, while carrying slightly different official consumption and emissions figures from the standard 918 Spyder. Porsche also brought the carbon-fibre structure, active aerodynamics and rear-axle steering from the development programme into the production car. Together, these systems were intended to improve both high-speed stability and cornering agility.

Variants

The production 918 Spyder range was not organised around a broad selection of engines or trim levels. The car was sold with its 887-hp plug-in hybrid system, while the Weissach Package formed the main documented technical and commercial distinction. The package was aimed at more demanding circuit use and came with slightly lower official fuel-consumption and emissions figures than the standard configuration. The Porsche sources consulted do not identify a factory version officially named “Base.” That term can therefore be retained as a library category, but it should not be presented as a documented Porsche trim level. The reference name for the production model remains 918 Spyder.
