History
The GLE’s story begins with the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, introduced in 1997 and produced notably at the company’s Tuscaloosa, Alabama facility. The model helped establish Mercedes-Benz in the premium SUV market before its name changed during the middle of the 2010s. In 2015, the facelifted third-generation M-Class adopted the GLE name. The change involved more than badging: the front-end design, equipment, infotainment and several powertrains were updated. The same period also brought the first GLE Coupé, a lower-roof body style aimed directly at the emerging luxury SUV-coupé segment. The second generation to use the GLE name was revealed in Paris in September 2018. Known internally as the W167, it introduced a newer architecture, a longer wheelbase and the MBUX interface. Mercedes-Benz also highlighted E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL active suspension and a variable all-wheel-drive system on selected versions. The W167 GLE Coupé was revealed in 2019 and reached dealers from 2020. The range subsequently received further updates covering exterior design, electrification and digital systems. In 2026, Mercedes-Benz presented a heavily revised GLE with a new software generation, an updated MBUX display concept and a revised powertrain range. Availability, equipment and model-year timing can differ between markets, so individual vehicle records should be checked against their original regional specifications.
Generations
Identifying the GLE’s major stages requires separating the first vehicle to carry the name from the all-new generation introduced from 2019. The 2015-2019 GLE is the W166, a direct development of the third-generation M-Class. It retains a conventional SUV shape, with a relatively upright rear window, a straight beltline and a traditionally arranged dashboard. The related GLE Coupé has a sloping roof and a visually shorter rear section; it is commonly associated with the C292 body code. The W167 generation appeared in 2018 as an SUV and in 2019 as a Coupé. It brought smoother proportions, a more spacious cabin and a digital environment centred on Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX system. The model introduced newer technologies, including optional active suspension and, depending on the powertrain, variable all-wheel-drive management. The W167 Coupé shares its technical basis with the SUV but uses a shorter wheelbase and a setup with a stronger emphasis on styling and road dynamics. The updates introduced for 2023 and 2026 are not always classified as entirely new structural generations: they are substantial revisions of the W167 family. Vehicle databases may list these model years as separate phases even though the underlying generation remains continuous. Exact equipment and timing should be verified by market and production date.
Key differences
The GLE SUV prioritises versatility. Its more upright body makes access to the rear seats easier and gives the vehicle a stronger emphasis on passenger space and long-distance use. On the W167 generation, a third seating row was available in selected markets and configurations, reinforcing its family-oriented role. The GLE Coupé uses a lower roofline, a more steeply angled rear window and a sportier profile. This shape generally gives styling greater priority than maximum rear cargo volume, although the Coupé retains five seats and the main technologies of the range. Differences between model years also include digital interfaces, driver-assistance systems, lighting design, electrified powertrains and suspension systems. The GLE name alone is not enough to identify an engine or specification: commercial designations, powertrains and equipment vary by country. AMG derivatives have their own styling, chassis calibration and powertrain hardware, while plug-in hybrid versions add a traction battery and the ability to drive for part of a journey using electric power.

The 2015-2019 GLE can first be identified by proportions close to the W166 M-Class: relatively upright sides, a regular roofline and a vertical rear end. The 2015 facelift brought a revised front end, redesigned headlamps and a more prominent Mercedes-Benz grille. Inside, the central display is integrated into the dashboard rather than mounted within a broad continuous glass panel. The period GLE Coupé is immediately recognisable by its fastback roof, frameless-looking side windows and rounded rear section. The W167 GLE has a smoother, wider appearance, with sculpted side surfaces and horizontally oriented rear lamps. Its cabin is identified by the visual pairing of a digital instrument cluster and central display, a signature feature of MBUX. Vehicles from later updates may have different light signatures, a revised steering wheel and more integrated displays. 4MATIC, AMG and engine badges can help, but they do not always establish the exact year or market. Reliable identification should combine body style, internal body code, production date and equipment specification.
Important versions
The most significant versions of the GLE family serve different priorities. The GLE SUV is the main body style, focusing on space, comfort and the towing capability commonly associated with the model. The GLE Coupé places greater emphasis on a sportier appearance and a distinctive roofline. Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 and GLE 63 derivatives sit at the performance end of the range, with AMG-specific chassis tuning and powertrain hardware. Depending on the market and model year, the GLE has also been offered with diesel, petrol, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. Names such as GLE 350, GLE 450, GLE 450 e, GLE 53 and GLE 63 should therefore not be treated as interchangeable: their technical content depends on the production period and country of sale.
