Lotus Exige Series 2 2004
In 2004, the Lotus Exige returned in fully reworked Series 2 form, while staying true to the idea of an extremely light coupé derived from the Elise family. This generation kept the fixed roof and the stripped-back, track-focused character that defined the model, but it moved to a newer technical base and a more contemporary appearance. Lotus positioned it as a road-usable car with clear circuit ambitions rather than a conventional grand tourer. In this specification, the Exige Series 2 is chiefly identified by its Toyota 1.8-litre variable-valve engine and six-speed manual transmission.

History
The Lotus Exige grew out of the same philosophy as the Sport Elise: to create a road-usable racing car, originally linked to a one-make cup supporting the British Touring Car Championship. Revealed before the opening round of the 2000 season, the first Exige was clearly set apart from the Elise by its fixed roof, wider wings, roof-mounted intake, rear wing and specific aerodynamic add-ons. Power came from a 1,796 cc Rover K-Series VHPD engine, rated at 177 hp for road use, with a track package lifted to 190 hp.
After a two-year interruption, Lotus brought the Exige back in 2004 as the Series 2. The core idea remained intact, but the car moved onto a newer Elise-based platform and adopted a more modern Toyota powertrain. Lotus kept the light structure and the family’s mid-engine layout, while updating the bodywork and its overall integration. This return opened a new chapter for the Exige, which would later expand into naturally aspirated, supercharged and circuit-focused derivatives.
