Renegade
The Jeep Renegade is a subcompact SUV unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2014 and introduced on the first European markets in autumn of that year. It brought Jeep into the small-SUV segment while retaining familiar brand cues such as the seven-slot grille, trapezoidal wheel arches, upright driving position and, on selected versions, a four-wheel-drive system intended for more demanding surfaces. The model resulted from an Italian-American development programme and was notably built at the Melfi plant in Italy. From 2014 through 2022, the Renegade range evolved through changes to engines, infotainment, driver-assistance equipment and transmissions. The versions covered here span that period, including a Base variant recorded from 2014 to 2022.

History
The Renegade made its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2014, followed by its North American premiere at the New York International Auto Show in April. Jeep positioned it as the brand’s first entry into the small-SUV segment. The project was developed by Italian and American teams within Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, with production notably assigned to the Melfi plant in southern Italy. That manufacturing background gives the Renegade a distinctive place in Jeep’s modern history: it was designed as a global model while having a major European production role. At its European launch, the range varied by market but commonly included Sport, Longitude, Limited and Trailhawk trim levels. Petrol and diesel engines could be paired with front-wheel drive or different four-wheel-drive systems. Trailhawk adopted the clearest off-road focus, while the other trims placed more emphasis on everyday usability. Jeep also promoted features such as the removable My Sky roof panels, Uconnect multimedia systems and a nine-speed automatic transmission on selected configurations. A significant update arrived for the 2019 model year. Exterior styling was revised, LED lighting became available and new 1.0- and 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol engines were introduced in selected markets. In 2022, the European range expanded further with electrified 4xe plug-in hybrid and e-Hybrid versions, depending on market. These updates changed the powertrain and equipment mix without creating a clearly separate second generation within the 2014–2022 period.
Generations
Across the 2014–2022 period, the Jeep Renegade represents one model generation, commonly identified by the internal BU designation in specialist documentation and catalogues. The first phase covers vehicles launched from 2014 onward. These cars are recognisable by their upright body, round headlamps set into a seven-slot grille and numerous graphic details associated with Jeep design language. Depending on market, this phase offered petrol or diesel engines, manual, automatic or dual-clutch transmissions, and either front- or four-wheel drive. The generation’s main development arrived for the 2019 model year. It was a facelift rather than a complete redesign. Changes included revised lighting, updates to parts of the grille and bumpers, a reorganised centre console and upgraded multimedia systems. New turbocharged petrol engines from FCA’s modular family were also introduced across several European markets. Model years 2020 through 2022 brought further equipment changes and, in Europe, electrified derivatives. The Renegade 4xe is a plug-in hybrid with four-wheel drive, while the e-Hybrid combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine, a dual-clutch transmission and a compact electric-assistance system. Availability varied by country and trim level. Therefore, apparent differences between vehicles from the same year may reflect regional specifications rather than a separate generation.
Key differences
Differences between Renegade vehicles are not determined by model year alone. Market specification has a major influence on engines, transmissions, output, drivetrain and safety equipment. A European Renegade may use a diesel or small turbocharged petrol engine, while a North American vehicle from a similar period may rely on different powertrains. Sport, Longitude, Limited and Trailhawk badges also do not guarantee identical equipment in every country. The most useful visual and technical distinction is between the original model and the 2019 facelift. The front end, lighting, interior details and engine range can change, while the vehicle’s overall architecture remains substantially the same. The later 4xe and e-Hybrid models add hardware associated with electrification and should be treated as distinct powertrain versions rather than a new generation. For accurate identification, compare the production year, market, trim, engine, transmission and drivetrain instead of relying on the Renegade name alone.
Photo recognition
The Renegade is first identified by its short, tall body, round headlamps, seven-slot Jeep grille and nearly square wheel arches. Its rear lamps use a cross-shaped graphic that is especially easy to see on early vehicles. Inside, the dashboard has a horizontal layout with a relatively upright centre stack and Jeep-inspired details, including “X” motifs on selected components. To distinguish the facelifted version, look at the front end. LED headlamps may be fitted, the lighting signature is more contemporary and the grille and bumpers were revised. The Uconnect screen and centre-console layout can also help separate model phases. Trailhawk versions generally feature more overt off-road equipment, such as dedicated exterior details, underbody protection or other market-specific hardware, together with Trailhawk badging. 4xe and e-Hybrid badges identify electrified derivatives, although their exact appearance varies by country. For a dependable identification, check the vehicle identification number, factory plate, engine specification and original market rather than relying on trim badges alone.
Important versions
The European launch range included Sport, Longitude, Limited and Trailhawk, with an Opening Edition offered during the early sales period. Sport served as the entry trim, Longitude generally added comfort and connectivity equipment, and Limited targeted a higher equipment level. Trailhawk was the clearest off-road derivative and could be equipped with Jeep Active Drive Low four-wheel drive, depending on configuration. The 4xe versions introduced in Europe from 2020 combined an internal-combustion engine with a rechargeable electric system. The later e-Hybrid added mild hybrid assistance, a 1.5-litre petrol engine and a dual-clutch transmission. Engines, drivetrains and equipment varied by market, so these trim names should not be compared without checking the country and model-year specification.
