Ford Capri 1969
The 1969 Ford Capri Base marks the beginning of a coupe range designed to look sporty while remaining relatively accessible. Shown at the Brussels Motor Show in 1969, the Capri followed the idea of an affordable performance car, drawing on the appeal that the Mustang had achieved in the United States. The Base version sat at the entry point of the line-up from launch, within a range already built around multiple engine and trim combinations. Its classic coupe proportions, with a long bonnet and short tail, gave it an immediate identity, even though its underlying mechanical layout was closely related to the Cortina.

History
The Capri arrived in 1969 as a new kind of Ford offering: a sporty coupe intended to stay within reach. Unveiled at the Brussels Motor Show, it was conceived in the spirit of the Mustang’s success, translated for Europe. Technically, it drew on a Cortina-related foundation, but Ford gave it a dedicated body so that it would have a character of its own. From the outset, the Capri was offered with several engine sizes and trim levels, leaving the Base version as the simplest entry in the original line-up.
The first generation, the Capri I, ran from 1969 to 1974. It is defined by classic coupe proportions: a long bonnet, a relatively low roofline, an extended rear quarter and a short tail. That shape separated it clearly from a conventional sedan-based derivative, even if the mechanical architecture remained familiar and practical. The 1969 Base version therefore belongs to the model’s founding phase, before the more practical Capri II and before the sharper styling of the Capri III. The more famous sporting derivatives would later become central to the model’s image.
