SF90
The Ferrari SF90 Stradale, unveiled in 2019, introduced Ferrari’s first series-production plug-in hybrid architecture. Its powertrain combines a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 with three electric motors, producing a claimed total of 1,000 cv. The SF90 name refers to the 90th anniversary of Scuderia Ferrari. The range expanded in 2020 with the SF90 Spider, which retains the berlinetta’s hybrid system while adding a retractable hard top. In 2023, Ferrari introduced the special-series SF90 XX Stradale and SF90 XX Spider. Both remain based on the SF90 platform, but they place greater emphasis on aerodynamic efficiency and track-oriented performance. The ScanRacer catalogue covers these four variants across the 2019–2023 period: Stradale, Spider, XX Stradale and XX Spider.

Model introduction
History
Ferrari unveiled the SF90 Stradale on 29 May 2019 as a major technological step for its series-production cars. The model combined a mid-rear-mounted 4.0-litre V8 producing 780 cv with three electric motors: two driving the front wheels and one positioned between the combustion engine and gearbox. This layout enabled all-wheel drive when required while also allowing the car to operate in a fully electric mode. Ferrari quoted 1,000 cv, a 0–100 km/h time of 2.5 seconds and a top speed above 340 km/h. The SF90 Spider was revealed on 12 November 2020. It became Ferrari’s first production plug-in hybrid convertible and retained the Stradale’s quoted total output. Its retractable hard top could open or close in 14 seconds, including while the car was moving. In June 2023, Ferrari introduced the SF90 XX Stradale and SF90 XX Spider as the first road-legal cars developed from the XX Programme. Production was limited to 799 examples of the Stradale and 599 examples of the Spider. Those restricted numbers, together with their more aggressive aerodynamic treatment, place the XX models above the regular SF90 variants in rarity and track focus.
Generations
The SF90 is not divided into separate generations within the period covered by ScanRacer. Instead, it is one technical family offered in four body or performance configurations. The 2019 SF90 Stradale is the foundation model: a closed berlinetta using a plug-in hybrid V8 powertrain, three electric motors and electronically controlled all-wheel drive. The SF90 Spider followed in 2020, carrying over the same basic architecture in an open body with a retractable hard top. The 2023 SF90 XX models are performance developments rather than an unrelated mechanical generation. The SF90 XX Stradale remains a closed berlinetta, while the SF90 XX Spider retains the retractable-roof concept. Ferrari increased their track orientation through more extensive aerodynamic work, dedicated control software and a quoted output of 1,030 cv. The XX Stradale is particularly notable for its large fixed rear wing and more overt aerodynamic surfaces. The years shown in ScanRacer correspond to the listed variants: Stradale in 2019, Spider in 2020, and XX Stradale and XX Spider in 2023.
Key differences
The clearest distinction is body style: the Stradale is a closed berlinetta, while the Spider adds a retractable hard top. The Spider retains the standard SF90’s plug-in hybrid powertrain and quoted 1,000 cv output. The difference between the regular and XX versions is more substantial. The XX models use dedicated control strategies, a more developed aerodynamic package and a quoted total output of 1,030 cv. The XX Stradale is especially identifiable by its fixed rear wing, while the XX Spider keeps the retractable-roof principle of the Spider on which it is based. Production numbers also set the special versions apart: Ferrari announced 799 SF90 XX Stradales and 599 SF90 XX Spiders. These figures apply to the limited series announced by Ferrari and should not be treated as production totals for the entire SF90 family.
Photo recognition
Start with the roof and overall body shape when identifying an SF90. A closed body points to either the Stradale or XX Stradale, while a retractable hard top identifies the Spider or XX Spider. The XX versions have a more overtly track-focused appearance, with additional aerodynamic openings and surfaces. The XX Stradale is most easily recognised by its large fixed rear wing, which is not fitted to the standard SF90 Stradale. The XX Spider keeps the retractable roof but receives similarly aggressive aerodynamic treatment. All four variants share important family clues: a mid-rear-mounted twin-turbocharged V8, two-seat supercar proportions and a plug-in hybrid system. The presence of three electric motors therefore does not distinguish a regular car from an XX model. Reliable identification should combine the body style, rear wing, bumper and bonnet details, and any available production or vehicle documentation. Equipment and exterior specification can vary by configuration and market, so visual identification alone should be treated as provisional when the XX-specific parts are not clearly visible.
Important versions
The SF90 Stradale is the launch version, introduced in 2019 and serving as the family’s technical reference. The SF90 Spider arrived in 2020, retaining the quoted performance of the standard model while adding open-air driving through its retractable hard top. The SF90 XX Stradale and SF90 XX Spider, presented in 2023, are the rarest and most track-focused variants. They are the first Ferrari XX cars homologated for road use. The XX Stradale is the closed-body version, with extensive aerodynamic development and a fixed rear wing; the XX Spider combines the same approach with a retractable roof. Within the ScanRacer context, these four variants cover the 2019–2023 period.
