F12

2012 - 2015

Introduced at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, the Ferrari F12berlinetta is a front-mid-engine V12 grand touring coupe developed to replace the 599 GTB Fiorano. Its naturally aspirated 6,262 cc engine produces 740 hp at 8,250 rpm and supports a top speed above 340 km/h. The car combines a transaxle layout, a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and an aluminium body engineered to reduce weight while improving aerodynamic performance. The F12 family also includes the F12tdf, unveiled in October 2015 as a limited special series restricted to 799 cars. This more focused derivative uses a 780 hp version of the V12, more extensive aerodynamic work, and Ferrari’s Virtual Short Wheelbase rear-wheel-steering system. Within the ScanRacer library, the documented versions are the 2012 F12berlinetta and the 2015 F12tdf.

Model introduction

History

The F12berlinetta marked a new stage in Ferrari’s twelve-cylinder road-car development when it arrived in 2012. It replaced the 599 GTB Fiorano while retaining the front-engine grand touring concept and placing greater emphasis on low mass, aerodynamic efficiency, and driver response. Ferrari specified a naturally aspirated 6,262 cc direct-injection V12 producing 740 hp, supported by electronic systems intended to make the performance usable on both road and track. The body was designed by Ferrari’s in-house Styling Centre under Flavio Manzoni, with aerodynamic solutions integrated into the surfaces rather than treated as separate add-on elements. The F12berlinetta also received recognition for its design and engineering, including the Compasso d’Oro. In 2015, Ferrari introduced the F12tdf, a special series named in reference to the Tour de France endurance race, an event Ferrari dominated during the 1950s and 1960s. Limited to 799 cars, it turned the F12 platform into a substantially more focused road car. The 812 Superfast replaced the F12berlinetta in Ferrari’s front-engined V12 range in 2017.

Generations

The Ferrari F12 is not divided into formally separate generations in the manufacturer sources reviewed. It is better understood as one V12 coupe family with two main expressions represented in the ScanRacer context. The F12berlinetta, introduced in 2012, is the series-production model. It uses a naturally aspirated 6,262 cc V12 producing 740 hp, a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and electronic systems including F1-Trac traction control, the E-Diff 3 electronic differential, and magnetorheological dampers. The F12tdf, revealed in 2015, is directly derived from that platform but has a much more uncompromising dynamic focus. Its engine produces 780 hp, with peak torque quoted at 705 Nm, while its revised bodywork creates substantially more aerodynamic downforce. It also introduces Ferrari’s Virtual Short Wheelbase rear-steering system, designed to sharpen turn-in while preserving high-speed stability. For classification purposes, it is therefore more accurate to describe the F12berlinetta and F12tdf as versions or derivatives rather than separate generations. The years available in ScanRacer are 2012 for the F12berlinetta and 2015 for the F12tdf.

Key differences

The main difference between the two F12 versions is their intended character. The F12berlinetta balances very high performance with grand touring comfort and road usability. Its V12 produces 740 hp, and Ferrari quotes a 0–100 km/h time of 3.1 seconds. The F12tdf retains the 6,262 cc displacement but increases output to 780 hp, reducing the claimed 0–100 km/h time to 2.9 seconds. It adds substantially more aggressive aerodynamic treatment, sharper chassis tuning, and the Virtual Short Wheelbase rear-steering system. The name references the Tour de France endurance race, while production was limited to 799 cars. From the outside, the tdf is generally identifiable by its more extensive aerodynamic surfaces and dedicated bodywork details. Exact equipment can vary with specification, so identification should rely on several features rather than paint colour or wheel design alone. A particularly important distinction is that the tdf is not simply a cosmetic package: Ferrari developed it as a more track-focused derivative of the F12berlinetta.

Photo recognition

To identify an F12berlinetta, look for a two-seat coupe with a long bonnet, a front-mid-engine stance, and a rear-set cabin. Its bodywork incorporates distinctive aerodynamic openings, including the side Aero Bridge channels, while the rear uses twin circular lamps on each side and a wide diffuser. Twenty-inch wheels are common, although wheel designs vary with specification. The F12tdf keeps the same overall silhouette but has a more aggressive appearance: dedicated bumpers, larger aerodynamic devices, revised bonnet and fender surfaces, and details intended to increase downforce. Some tdf configurations also feature prominent carbon-fibre components. Visual identification can be complicated by aftermarket parts and personalised Ferrari builds, which are relatively common among high-value cars. The most reliable approach is to compare several features at once, including the bumpers, air intakes, rear fenders, wheels, and documented specification. Paint colour by itself is not a dependable identifier, and a modified F12berlinetta can imitate some of the tdf’s visual cues.

Important versions

The F12berlinetta is the family’s core version. Introduced in 2012, it combines a naturally aspirated 6,262 cc V12, 740 hp, a top speed above 340 km/h, and a grand touring-oriented chassis concept. The F12tdf is the most exclusive and radical derivative. Unveiled in October 2015, it pays tribute to the Tour de France endurance race and was limited to 799 cars. Its V12 produces 780 hp, while its revised aerodynamics and Virtual Short Wheelbase system improve agility and track performance. In the ScanRacer data supplied here, the F12berlinetta is associated with 2012 and the F12tdf with 2015. Those years describe the entries available in the library and should not be read as a complete record of every market, delivery date, or customer specification. Individual cars may also differ through factory options, Ferrari Tailor Made choices, and later modifications.
