BMW X5M 2014

In 2014, the BMW X5 M entered a new generation with the F85, based on the X5 F15. In Base form, BMW M kept the formula of a large high-performance SUV but updated it with a 4.4-liter M TwinPower Turbo V8 and an announced output of 575 hp. Torque rose to 750 Nm, placing this X5 M among the strongest members of BMW’s X range at the time. An eight-speed automatic transmission and an xDrive system with a rear-biased character reinforced its dynamic intent, while the chassis received dedicated tuning. It was therefore not just a standard X5 with sporty trim, but a model engineered from the start for performance.

History

The X5 M appeared in 2009, when BMW M first applied its high-performance approach to the X family. The initial E70 generation introduced a 4.4-liter M TwinPower Turbo V8 with 555 hp. BMW emphasized the placement of the turbochargers and catalytic converters in the engine’s V, a layout intended to improve responsiveness and provide steady torque delivery. That first X5 M used all-wheel drive and dedicated chassis tuning, rather than relying on a standard X5 with sporty trim.

The second generation arrived in 2014 under the F85 code, based on the X5 F15. It kept the same basic 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 concept, but in a stronger state of tune, with an announced 575 hp and 750 Nm. BMW paired it with an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission and specific chassis settings. The xDrive system was described with a more rear-biased character to preserve the driving feel expected of an M model. Since commercial timing can vary by market, the 2014 date here refers to the debut of the F85 generation.

Evolution

Compared with the E70, the 2014 F85 X5 M gained both output and transmission sophistication. The 4.4-liter V8 rose from 555 to 575 hp, while torque reached 750 Nm. The eight-speed automatic replaced the earlier transmission setup and helped manage the extra performance more effectively. BMW kept all-wheel drive, but tuned it to allow a more M-like driving character. Chassis calibration was also model-specific. At this stage, the Base version is defined less by visual embellishment than by this mechanical and dynamic package unique to the F85 generation.

Variants

Within the 2014 X5 M range, the Base version represents the standard F85 configuration. The dossier does not assign it any unique trim-specific equipment, but it sits at the starting point of the generation introduced that year, before any market- or package-specific variants. Its identity therefore rests on the F85 mechanical package: a 4.4-liter M TwinPower Turbo V8, 575 hp, 750 Nm, an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic, and xDrive with a rear-biased character. To compare examples from this period properly, the model year, generation code, and market-specific content must all be checked separately, since specifications can differ by country. The Base is the most direct expression of that new X5 M formula.
