Bentley Continental GT 2018

The 2018 Bentley Continental GT belongs to the modern Continental lineage, a family created to combine strong performance with the brand’s traditional luxury. Within the model’s history, the GT has a key role: it launched the contemporary generation in 2003, bringing a W12 engine and a refined design language. For 2018, the dossier mainly places it as one of the core expressions of that modern range, alongside the other later Continental derivatives. Its character is therefore rooted in Bentley’s established grand touring formula: a luxurious, sharply styled car with advanced technology, rather than a radical departure.

History

Bentley’s Continental story dates back to 1952, when the R-Type Continental was introduced with the aim of delivering remarkable performance without giving up the brand’s luxury character. That approach continued through the S1, S2, and S3, which steadily improved comfort and driving refinement across the 1950s and early 1960s. After a long break, the name returned in 1984 with the Continental Convertible, followed in 1991 by the Continental R, a more powerful model with a distinctive presence. The modern era began in 2003 with the Continental GT, which marked the start of a new, more technologically advanced family. From there, the range expanded to include the GTC, Flying Spur, and Supersports, each emphasizing a different interpretation of Bentley grand touring. By 2018, the GT stood as a central expression of that modern tradition, combining prestige, performance, and refinement.

Evolution

Compared with the earlier Continental generations, the 2018 Continental GT belongs to a far more technological phase of the model’s life. The dossier notes that the modern generation launched in 2003 brought W12 and V8 engines, along with systems such as adaptive air suspension and a 48-volt roll-control system. In that context, the GT is the foundation of the contemporary range, the model from which Bentley developed several body styles and mechanical directions. In 2018, it is defined less by a break with the past than by the maturity of a proven formula: grand luxury, cleaner lines, and advanced technology. It is a logical evolution of the Continental concept rather than a reinvention.

Variants

Within the modern Continental family, the GT is the reference grand touring coupé. The dossier presents it as the model that launched the current generation in 2003, while the GTC is its open-top derivative from 2005. The Flying Spur carries the Continental idea into luxury saloon form, and the Supersports pushes the range further toward outright performance. For a 2018 Continental GT, that means a central but balanced position: it is the most iconic shape in the line-up, without the open-air emphasis of the GTC or the more extreme performance focus of the Supersports. That role helps define its place within Bentley’s range.
