History

The 2012 Audi RS4 belongs to the model’s third generation, known as the B8, following the initial B5 and B7 versions. The B5 RS4 launched in 2000 featured a 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6 exclusively in Avant body style. The B7, introduced in 2005, switched to a naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V8 and offered three body styles: sedan, Avant, and convertible. With the B8 in 2012, Audi narrowed its focus back to the Avant only but retained high output through an enhanced 450 hp naturally aspirated V8. This generation represents a key phase balancing high performance, quattro all-wheel drive, and family practicality in a single package.

Evolution

Compared to previous generations, the 2012 RS4 B8 maintains the naturally aspirated V8 engine but raises power output to 450 horsepower, reflecting significant performance upgrades. Unlike the B7 generation that offered sedan, Avant, and convertible body styles, the B8 focuses solely on the Avant wagon, reinforcing its image as a sporty yet practical family car. The quattro all-wheel-drive system remains central, ensuring excellent handling and stability. The B8’s design is more contemporary and aligns with the A4 styling cues of that period.

Variants

In 2012, the RS4 B8 is offered solely in the Base trim with an Avant wagon body style. This configuration clearly differs from previous generations that featured multiple body options. The primary goal of this version is to blend sporty high performance with the practicality of a family car. Numerous options and trims, although not detailed here, typically serve to customize the driving experience without altering the core setup of the V8 engine and all-wheel-drive system.
