Audi A8 2017

2017

In 2017, the Audi A8 Base belongs to the final phase of the third-generation full-size sedan. Tracing its roots back to the 1994 original, it continues a formula built around light construction, comfort, and strong technology content. Within the range, the Base trim represents the most understated interpretation of the A8, while keeping the model’s premium positioning intact. On this generation, the A8 is marked by tighter body lines, a large Singleframe grille, and an interior shaped around electronics and perceived quality. The 2017 car therefore sits between the 2010 generation shift and the 2013 update, offering a more restrained expression than the richer, more feature-heavy versions.

History

The Audi A8 entered the brand’s history in 1994, when the luxury sedan replaced the Audi V8 and introduced a new naming logic. From the outset, the Audi Space Frame aluminum construction was a key part of its identity, with Audi presenting it as a way to reduce mass compared with a conventional body structure. The aim was not only technical; it also linked the A8 to efficiency and refined road manners.

The second generation, launched in 2002, kept that aluminum foundation but adopted a more substantial design and more integrated electronics. Audi’s MMI interface was introduced in the brand’s official presentation, while the range expanded with long-wheelbase versions and a 6.0-liter W12. In 2010, the third generation continued the move toward greater sophistication with cleaner styling, a wider mix of gasoline and diesel engines, more elaborate suspension, and additional comfort equipment. The 2013 update brought styling changes, revised engines, and Matrix LED headlights depending on market and trim. The 2017 Base version belongs to this final phase before the next generation arrived.

Evolution

The third-generation A8, launched in 2010, is the family to which the 2017 Base version belongs. Its styling is sharper than that of earlier generations, with a large Singleframe grille and a more horizontal cabin layout. For this generation, the emphasis is on electronic sophistication, comfort, and a broad mechanical spread, including gasoline and diesel engines plus more prestigious variants in some markets.

The 2017 A8 comes after the 2013 update, which brought styling changes, revised powertrains, and Matrix LED headlights. In Base trim, the presentation is generally more restrained than on higher-spec versions, but the car still retains the A8’s essential traits: a stately luxury sedan, a lightweight architecture inherited from ASF, and a technology-first character rather than overt flamboyance.

Variants

Within the A8 family, the Base trim is the entry point for the 2017 model year. It should be understood as a restrained take on an already very high-end sedan, not as a different concept. The dossier notes that commercial names and equipment can vary by market, which also applies to engines and transmissions.

Across the A8 line, the most notable derivatives remain the S8, tuned for a more dynamic character, the long-wheelbase A8 L, focused on rear-seat space, and W12 versions, which sit at the top of the range in terms of prestige. Depending on the country, the third generation also offered V6 and V8 gasoline engines, V6 and V8 diesels, and hybrids. The 2017 Base therefore belongs to a broad lineup, but with a more discreet presentation than the richest trims or the most powerful versions.
