Koenigsegg unveiled the CCGT1 in 2026, a tribute to a racing car that never raced. If you come across one, here is how to identify it with confidence — and why AI still gets it wrong.
The short story: a GT1 that never started
In the early 2000s, Koenigsegg built the CCGT for the GT1 category. The car was finished and ready to race. A change in the technical regulations made it ineligible before its debut, and it never took a start.
Twenty years later, the manufacturer revived the idea as the CCGT1. This time it is road-homologated across markets, with an optional factory track package. Koenigsegg has also restored the original CCGT through its Legends Division to campaign it in historic racing.
The three cues that are usually enough
The tail lights. Three round units ringed in red on each side, six in total. No other manufacturer currently uses this layout. It is the most reliable cue, and it works even on a blurry or night shot.
The rear wing. Fixed, large, with a continuous light bar running along its entire trailing edge. This detail is rare on a production car and is visible from a long way off.
The front end. Three horizontally aligned LED elements in each headlight, and the ghost crest in the centre of the bonnet.
Confirmation details
To lock the identification down:
- Stalk-mounted mirrors, above the front wings
- Vortex generators lined up along the top of the front wings
- Five-spoke turbine-style wheels, a nod to the 2000s CC cars
- CCGT1 lettering repeated on the door, the wing endplate and the splitter
- Carbon diffuser with two circular exhaust outlets
Not to be confused with a Jesko or a Gemera
The most common confusion comes from the silhouette. The CCGT1 borrows the proportions of the 2000s CC cars: a low nose, a forward cabin, a short and wide tail. The Jesko and Gemera follow a much more recent styling language, with slim light signatures instead of round units.
Put simply: if the car looks old in its proportions but new in its details, you are probably looking at a CCGT1.
What AI still gets wrong
Be honest about the tool: a recognition model trained on existing photos has seen almost nothing of the CCGT1, since it has only just been revealed and will be built in very small numbers. On cars like this, AI often suggests a CC8S, a CCR or an Agera — models that are close in silhouette and far better represented in the data.
That is exactly why the visual cues above beat an automatic prediction until the model catches up.
