Brand history
Founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, Tesla was named after inventor Nikola Tesla. Elon Musk joined the company in 2004 as chairman, investing over $30 million. In 2008, Tesla launched its first all-electric vehicle, the Roadster, offering a range of 394 km and performance comparable to gasoline sports cars. In 2012, production of the Roadster ceased to focus on the Model S, a luxury sedan praised for its performance and design. The Model X, an SUV with falcon-wing doors, was introduced in 2015. In 2017, Tesla launched the Model 3, a more affordable sedan, followed by the Model Y in 2020, a compact SUV. In 2023, Tesla unveiled the Cybertruck, an electric pickup with a futuristic design. In 2025, the company announced the end of production of the Model S and Model X to focus on artificial intelligence projects, including the Optimus humanoid robot. (britannica.com)
