Impreza WRX STi sedan

1994 - 2007

Introduced in Japan in 1994, the Subaru Impreza WRX STi sedan was the high-performance evolution of the Impreza WRX, developed by Subaru Tecnica International. It combined a turbocharged boxer engine, all-wheel drive and a chassis shaped by Subaru’s rally experience. From 1994 to 2007, the sedan developed from the first-generation GC8 into the various GD-family body updates, with significant changes to styling, driveline hardware, braking and body rigidity. Names such as Version, Type RA, spec C, S202, S203 and S204 do not always indicate ordinary trim levels; some identify limited editions or lighter, competition-oriented configurations. Equipment and output differed by market, model year and chassis code, so a precise identification is important when comparing cars. The ScanRacer coverage spans the model’s 1994–2007 period and includes three referenced variants.

Model introduction

Introduced in Japan in 1994, the Subaru Impreza WRX STi sedan was the high-performance evolution of the Impreza WRX, developed by Subaru Tecnica International. It combined a turbocharged boxer engine, all-wheel drive and a chassis shaped by Subaru’s rally experience. Equipment and output differed by market, model year and chassis code, so a precise identification is important when comparing cars. The ScanRacer coverage spans the model’s 1994–2007 period and includes three referenced variants.

History

The WRX STi appeared in 1994 as an evolution of the WRX, at a time when Subaru was bringing its production cars closer to its rally program. Subaru Tecnica International, established as the company’s specialist motorsport arm, worked on the engine, drivetrain, chassis and control systems. The earliest cars are generally associated with the GC8 sedan chassis code and were progressively updated through numbered Version editions. Type RA models placed greater emphasis on weight reduction and competition use, while other limited editions introduced distinct equipment or more focused tuning. The second-generation Impreza arrived around 2000 and used the GD family of chassis codes for the sedan. It retained the turbocharged flat-four and all-wheel-drive layout, while developing body rigidity, braking, suspension geometry and center-differential control. S202, S203 and S204 editions demonstrate how widely the STi range expanded. In 2004, the WRX STi also became available in the United States, with equipment and specifications tailored to that market. The year 2007 brought a transition to a newer, wider Impreza generation. Because launch dates, names and specifications differed between Japan, North America and other markets, year-by-year identification should always be checked against the relevant market documentation.

Generations

The first major family consists of GC8 Impreza WRX STi cars, produced through the 1990s until the transition to the next generation. The sedan is identified by its compact proportions, relatively narrow body and successive changes across Versions I to VI. These updates were not merely cosmetic: Subaru and STI also revised the engine, cooling system, drivetrain, brakes and suspension settings. Type RA models formed a more stripped-back, performance-oriented branch, but not every GC8 car shared the same equipment. The second family is the GD sedan, introduced around 2000. It brought a more modern body, several facelift stages and visual variations commonly nicknamed Bugeye, Blobeye and Hawkeye. These names are enthusiast descriptions of appearance; they do not replace the chassis code or the original market specification. Cars from 2004 to 2007 received various changes to gearing, wheels, brakes and differential calibration, depending on the year and country. In 2007, Subaru unveiled a new wide-bodied WRX STI. It belongs to a different generation, even though its launch overlaps the calendar period associated with the final GD sedans. Market-specific brochures are therefore essential when assigning a precise generation.

Key differences

A WRX STi differs from an ordinary Impreza WRX through a broader performance package, although the exact gap depends on model year and market. Recurring features include a more highly developed turbocharged boxer engine, a strengthened manual gearbox, a specially controlled center differential on certain versions, larger brakes and firmer suspension tuning. Type RA and spec C editions go further by targeting lower weight, sharper engine response or greater suitability for competition-style driving. Differences between STi sedans can also be visible in the bodywork. Wider fenders, a hood scoop, special wheels, a large rear spoiler or Brembo brake calipers are useful clues, but none is sufficient on its own to identify a particular Version. Market names, engines and safety equipment changed between countries. It is therefore important to distinguish a genuine factory STi from a WRX fitted with STI parts or from a later aftermarket conversion. Chassis documentation and factory build information remain more reliable than appearance alone.

Photo recognition

To identify an Impreza WRX STi sedan, begin with the chassis code, manufacturer plate and original documentation rather than color or spoiler design. First-generation sedans are generally associated with the GC8 code, while the following generation uses the GD family. The complete code, often followed by an evolution letter, provides a better indication of the model year and specification. Exterior details can then add useful clues: hood scoop, headlamp design, grille shape, fender width, wheel pattern, rear spoiler and mirror style. Inside, the seats, steering wheel, instruments and any center-differential controls may help, but they are not conclusive by themselves. Also check the gearbox, brakes, hub pattern and factory part references. The 22B, for example, is a highly distinctive two-door limited model and should not be treated as a standard sedan. Version, RA, spec C and S names must be verified against the original market and vehicle identification data, because similar badges or STI parts may have been added later.

Important versions

Key versions include the GC8 WRX STi Version I to VI cars, which document the gradual development of the first-generation platform. Type RA editions emphasized a lighter, more competition-focused specification. The 1998 22B STi is especially famous, but its two-door coupe body separates it from the sedans covered here. Within the GD generation, the S202, S203 and S204 were limited editions developed by STI, with changes involving areas such as weight, chassis tuning, brakes, exhaust and trim. Spec C models placed greater emphasis on performance and motorsport homologation. North American cars sold from 2004 onward should be assessed separately, since their equipment, calibration and market naming do not necessarily match Japanese versions. Factory documentation is the safest way to distinguish an original limited edition from a standard STi carrying similar aftermarket components.
