Ram
Ram is a Stellantis brand focused on pickup trucks and commercial vehicles. Established as a standalone brand separate from Dodge in 2009, it built its identity around the Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500, while also offering Chassis Cab trucks and ProMaster vans for professional users. Its product strategy combines towing and payload capability with increasingly refined cabins, giving the range a broader role than traditional work trucks alone. The Ram 1500 remains the core nameplate: the generation introduced for 2019 brought a lighter structure, coil-spring rear suspension and, on selected versions, the eTorque mild-hybrid system. Ram has also expanded its presence in South America with region-specific products. The new Dakota was shown in Brazil during 2025 and entered the Brazilian market in 2026, marking the brand’s move into the midsize pickup segment in that market.

Ram overview
Ram history
The Ram name comes from Dodge’s pickup history, but the Ram brand was separated from Dodge in 2009. That restructuring allowed the company to focus more directly on pickups and commercial vehicles instead of treating trucks as one part of a broader Dodge passenger-car range. The 2010 model year was an important transition period, bringing new Heavy Duty developments and the availability of crew-cab body styles on selected trucks. For 2011, Ram added Chassis Cab models and introduced the upscale Laramie Longhorn specification for the Ram 1500. The Ram 1500 redesign launched for 2009 helped distinguish the brand through its coil-spring rear suspension, which placed unusual emphasis on ride comfort in the full-size pickup class. A significant styling update followed for 2013, while the 2015 Rebel gave the brand a more explicit off-road identity. The next major 1500 generation arrived for 2019 with a lighter structure, expanded cabin technology and the 48-volt eTorque system on selected powertrains. Ram also broadened its commercial range with ProMaster and ProMaster City vans. In South America, the brand has continued to adapt its portfolio to local demand, most recently adding the Dakota to compete in the midsize pickup category.
Ram positioning
Ram is positioned around pickup trucks that can serve both professional duties and everyday transportation. The Ram 1500 competes in the light-duty full-size pickup class, with a strong emphasis on cabin comfort, interior space and versatility. The Ram 2500 and 3500 move the range toward heavy-duty work, while Chassis Cab versions provide platforms for specialized commercial bodies and equipment. This structure separates routine hauling from intensive towing and commercial conversion requirements. The brand remains closely associated with strength and capability, but its positioning is not based on output alone. Cabin refinement, storage solutions, available air suspension and electronic assistance systems also shape the Ram experience. Laramie, Limited and Longhorn specifications represent the more premium side of the range, while Rebel and Power Wagon emphasize off-road use. The Dakota adds a smaller pickup format to the portfolio, particularly in South America, where Ram introduced the model to enter the midsize pickup segment. Its presence shows that the brand’s strategy extends beyond large North American trucks.
Recognizing a Ram in a photo
To identify a Ram pickup, start with the grille and the ram-head emblem, then check the generation and trim level. Modern Ram 1500 models often use a tall front end, prominent grille and horizontal lighting signatures, although the exact details vary by model year and specification. Rebel versions typically have a more overt off-road appearance, with distinctive wheels, tires and darker exterior details. Power Wagon models add equipment and styling cues associated with trail use, while Heavy Duty 2500 and 3500 trucks look more substantial and may use single or dual rear wheels depending on configuration. The 1500, 2500, 3500, 4500 and 5500 badges are important clues to the truck’s intended workload. Chassis Cab models are easy to separate from standard pickups because they leave the rear frame ready for a customer or specialist body instead of carrying a factory bed. ProMaster badges identify the van family rather than a pickup. The Dakota occupies a smaller footprint than the full-size trucks and has a more compact body proportion, reflecting its midsize positioning in the South American market.
Important Ram models
The Pickup is the core of the Ram range and spans several capability levels, from the light-duty 1500 to Heavy Duty trucks. It is offered with different cab lengths, drivetrains and trim philosophies, which explains the wide variety of configurations represented between 2010 and 2026. The Chassis Cab follows a more commercial formula: its rear frame is intended for specialized bodies, boxes or equipment rather than a conventional factory pickup bed. The ProMaster City represents Ram’s compact-van approach, suited to urban deliveries and small businesses, while the ProMaster Rapid is a commercial derivative associated with selected Latin American markets. The Dakota occupies a different position. Its return under the Ram name supports the brand’s entry into the midsize pickup segment in South America; it was shown in Brazil in 2025 and launched commercially there in 2026 with versions such as Warlock and Laramie. Together, these models illustrate how Ram has expanded beyond large North American pickups by adapting vehicle formats to regional requirements and professional use cases.
