Opel Grandland 2024

Revealed in April 2024 at Eisenach, the new Opel Grandland introduced the STLA Medium platform to Opel’s range. Designed for electrified vehicles, this second-generation compact SUV was announced with 48-volt hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrains. It also grew significantly compared with its predecessor and adopted a more spacious, technology-focused interior. Opel confirmed that the model would be built in Germany at the Eisenach plant in Thuringia. The “Base” designation should be treated carefully because trim names and standard equipment vary between markets. In some European markets, the entry-level version was marketed as Design or under another local name, while the underlying Grandland range extended from the hybrid model to the battery-electric Grandland Electric.

History

The Grandland story began in 2017 with the launch of the Grandland X, a compact SUV positioned above the Crossland X in Opel’s line-up. Developed during Opel’s transition into the PSA Group, it shared its technical foundations with the first-generation Peugeot 3008. The model later received a substantial facelift and gradually dropped the “X” suffix, becoming simply the Grandland. That update introduced Opel’s Vizor front-end treatment and a more modern cabin. In 2024, Opel revealed a completely new generation based on Stellantis’ STLA Medium architecture. Its world premiere took place at Eisenach, the German plant selected for production. The second-generation model also represented a strategic change in powertrain policy: Opel announced electrified versions across the range, including 48-volt hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric variants.

Anecdotes

The 2024 Grandland made its world premiere at Eisenach, the very plant selected to build it. Opel upgraded the factory to support the STLA Medium platform and added a dedicated battery shop. The company also highlighted the use of recycled materials, stating that more than 500 kilograms of the vehicle’s mass come from recycled or renewable sources. These details underline the model’s role in Opel’s wider industrial and electrification transition.

Production

The second-generation Grandland was designed and engineered in Germany and assembled at Opel’s Eisenach plant in Thuringia. Stellantis announced an investment of more than €130 million to adapt the facility for the new model and its electrified derivatives. The production system was designed to handle different vehicle architectures, including hybrid and battery-electric versions. No reliable public figure has been identified for the total production of the 2024 Grandland or for a specific “Base” trim. Production totals would also vary according to market, powertrain and the period being measured.

Press reception

Early commentary needs to be separated from the generational change. In its 2024 review of the outgoing first-generation Grandland, Top Gear considered the facelifted styling more appealing and the standard equipment competitive, but criticised the ordinary driving experience and firm ride. The publication advised readers to wait for the next-generation model, which was due later in 2024. That assessment mainly concerns the 2017-2024 vehicle and should not be presented as a definitive verdict on the second-generation Grandland. At launch, the better-documented points about the new model were its STLA Medium platform, electrified powertrain strategy and increased exterior dimensions.

Evolution

The 2024 Grandland moves away from the proportions of the first generation and adopts a visibly larger body. Opel lists a length of 4,650 mm, approximately 17 cm more than its predecessor. The extra size is intended to improve passenger space and luggage capacity, with up to 1,645 litres quoted depending on configuration. The technical evolution is equally important: the STLA Medium platform was developed to accommodate large battery packs and electric drivetrains. Styling links the production vehicle to Opel’s Experimental concept through features such as the 3D Vizor, illuminated branding and new interior storage solutions.

Variants

The 2024 Grandland range extends beyond a single powertrain. Opel announced a 48-volt Grandland Hybrid, a plug-in hybrid and the battery-electric Grandland Electric. The hybrid combines a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor integrated into a six-speed dual-clutch e-DCT6 transmission; Opel quotes 136PS for this system. Launch information from Opel Germany lists the initial electric model with a 213PS motor and a usable 73kWh battery. Trim names depend on the market. In the United Kingdom, for example, the range was offered in Design, GS and Ultimate forms. “Base” should therefore be understood as a generic entry designation rather than a single, Europe-wide official specification.
