Nissan Silvia 1999

The 1999 Nissan Silvia Base is part of the S15 generation, noted for its more compact styling compared to the preceding S14. This version retains the defining features of the S15, including a narrower front fascia and fixed headlights. As the entry-level trim within the Japanese Silvia lineup of that year, the Base offered a more understated yet balanced approach to this iconic sports coupe, catering to buyers who sought a blend of style and performance without the additional features found in higher trims.

History

The Silvia nameplate carries a storied legacy starting in 1964 with the first CSP311 Silvia, a finely crafted coupe featuring a clean design and a 1.6-liter engine, produced in very limited numbers. After a hiatus, the model was revived in 1975 with the S10 generation, followed by the angular S110 and S12 models during the 1980s that expanded the range. The larger and more stable S14 debuted in 1993, while the S15, produced until the early 2000s, returned to a more compact and refined style. The 1999 Silvia Base belongs to this final chapter before the classic model’s production ended in Japan.

Evolution

The Nissan Silvia evolved through seven major generations, each introducing changes in size, styling, and mechanical features. The 1999 Base version is part of the sixth-generation S15, which is noted for returning to more compact proportions and featuring a sleeker front end compared to the wider S14. This model maintains the dynamic character and refined handling focus, while providing a sports coupe accessible to buyers who do not require the more advanced features found in the performance-oriented Spec-R trim.

Variants

Within the S15 lineup, the Base served as the entry-level version, lacking the sportier and more expensive features found on trims like the Spec-S or Spec-R. Those higher trims typically come equipped with more powerful turbocharged SR20DET engines, enhanced suspensions, and performance-focused components. The Base focuses on a simpler setup aimed at everyday driving and maintaining an elegant silhouette, without attempting to compete with the more competition-oriented higher-end versions.
