The Nissan GT-R50 by Italdesign is an exceptionally exclusive coupe created through a collaboration between Nissan and the Italian coachbuilder Italdesign. Revealed as a prototype in 2018, it was based on the 2018 Nissan GT-R NISMO and marked two anniversaries: 50 years of the GT-R in 2019 and 50 years of Italdesign in 2018. Its design radically reshaped the R35 silhouette with a lowered roof, widened bodywork, floating round taillights and an adjustable rear wing. Beneath the dramatic body, the 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 received upgrades influenced by Nissan’s racing program. Nissan and Italdesign later announced an artisanal production run capped at 50 cars, with each example eligible for individual exterior and interior customization.

History

The GT-R50 project came from Nissan and Italdesign’s first collaboration. The prototype was developed from a production GT-R NISMO and shown to the European public at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July 2018. Nissan positioned it as a celebration of two important anniversaries rather than as a next-generation GT-R. Exterior and interior design work was carried out by Nissan Design Europe in London and Nissan Design America, while Italdesign handled the vehicle’s development, engineering and construction.

The transformation went beyond a cosmetic body kit. The roofline was lowered by 54 millimeters, the body gained more pronounced wheel-arch forms, and the GT-R’s “samurai blade” side vents became a prominent visual feature. NISMO also upgraded the powertrain with GT3-style turbochargers and strengthened internal components. Following the prototype’s presentation, Nissan confirmed in December 2018 that Italdesign would take orders for a limited run of 50 cars. The production model retained most of the show car’s visual identity, although some details were revised for road use and manufacturing.

Anecdotes

The GT-R50 name directly refers to the two anniversaries celebrated by the project: the GT-R’s 50th anniversary in 2019 and Italdesign’s in 2018. Nissan also made clear that the car was not intended to represent the next GT-R generation. Its visual language was developed by Nissan’s design studios rather than by Italdesign alone, although the Italian coachbuilder handled the vehicle’s engineering and construction.

Production

In December 2018, Nissan announced that Italdesign would build no more than 50 GT-R50s and begin accepting orders. The starting price reported at the time was approximately $1.1 million before personalization. Production was intended to be artisanal, using GT-R cars that would be transformed by Italdesign. This approach set the GT-R50 apart from a regular Nissan model assembled on a conventional production line.

The sources consulted clearly document the announced limit of 50 cars, but they do not establish with certainty how many vehicles were ultimately completed. It is therefore more accurate to describe the project as a planned production run of up to 50 examples rather than state that exactly 50 were delivered. Bespoke exterior and interior specifications were a central part of the model’s positioning and pricing.

Press reception

Automotive coverage largely focused on the contrast between the familiar GT-R NISMO hardware and the project’s radically styled bodywork. Car and Driver praised the combination of Japanese design cues and Italian coachbuilding, while also noting that the first prototype remained a concept and that the cabin changed toward a more road-compliant production specification. Top Gear emphasized the transition from concept to production, the announced power output, the very high price and the small planned production run.

Media attention therefore centered more on design, rarity and exclusivity than on comprehensive comparative road tests. The available commentary is not sufficient to establish a consistent dynamic assessment for every production car.

Evolution

Between the 2018 prototype and the production-intended version, the GT-R50 evolved without abandoning its main design theme. The overall shape, widened fenders, separate round taillights and rear wing were retained. Car and Driver reported enlarged exterior mirrors and a reshaped rear valance to accommodate a license plate. The same report described a less experimental cabin, with instrumentation and controls closer to those of a conventional GT-R.

The announced powertrain remained based on the 3.8-liter VR38DETT V6 prepared by NISMO. Official material described the prototype’s output as an estimated 720 PS, while some English-language publications presented the figure as 710 or 711 horsepower depending on unit conversion and rounding. The prototype figures should therefore be distinguished from the final specification of every individual customer car.

Variants

The GT-R50 was not offered as a conventional trim-level range. The project began with a single prototype based on the 2018 GT-R NISMO and then moved toward an artisanal production run capped at 50 cars. Each vehicle could reportedly be configured with customer-selected colors and materials, making comparisons between strictly standardized variants less meaningful.

The Nissan prototype combined Liquid Kinetic Gray paintwork with Energetic Sigma Gold accents and an interior using carbon fiber, Alcantara and black Italian leather. Available information indicates that the production-intended car retained a very similar appearance, while adopting changes related to homologation and manufacturing. No separate official derivative, such as an independently named Track or NISMO version, is documented in the sources consulted.
